Gillette Needs Your Stories as Part of $100,000 Donation to USO

In support of the men and women who heroically serve our country, Gillette and the USO have once again teamed up to provide a terrific opportunity for You Served readers to show your support for our service members. You can participate in this great cause by submitting stories and photos of individuals who inspire you through their commitment to serving our country.

Now through December 31st, Gillette will donate $1 to the USO for every picture or story posted of a service member in your life to the Gillette Facebook page. To participate, all you need to do is visit Gillette’s Facebook page and share your pride in a salute, message, photo or video about a loved one in the military. The post can be a simple thank you, a military headshot or a more detailed personal story about your friends and family.

Gillette will help to connect deployed military parents with their children through the United Through Reading Program, inspire and provide educational programs through the Sesame Street Workshop, and enable families to send personalized care packages through the USO Care Package program.

Please help spread the word and share this opportunity with your friends and family to help uplift the spirits of families and service members this holiday season. The USO does so much for us over here in Afghanistan and they could truly use the money, especially after our USO here on KAF was virtually destroyed during the flooding and needs huge renovations.

The USO just delivered this truckload of Girl Scout Cookies to our deploying Brigade! I think the 1SGs should brace for an uptick in 600-9 counselings!

The Way We Get By comes to POV on PBS

The Way We Get By, the awesome documentary that we publicized on our radio show a few months ago, will have its national premiere on PBS Veterans Day November 11th at 9pm.

On call 24 hours a day for the past five years, a group of senior citizens has made history by greeting nearly 900,000 American troops at a tiny airport in Bangor, Maine. The Way We Get By is an intimate look at three of these greeters as they confront the universal losses that come with aging and rediscover their reason for living. Bill Knight, Jerry Mundy and Joan Gaudet find the strength to overcome their personal battles and transform their lives through service. This inspirational and surprising story shatters the stereotypes of today’s senior citizens as the greeters redefine the meaning of community.

This film already has support from a number of organizations, including Serve.gov, the USO and Operation Homefront. The film demonstrates how important it is to support our troops, and puts a very human face on those who are deployed and returning. I hope that you will tune-in to the PBS broadcast or watch the film online. You won’t be sorry!!
