New Online Tools for Veteran Job-Seekers

Veterans now have on-demand access and can download official data about their military training and experience, which can be used to help them find jobs and continue their careers. Their service data can be uploaded to job search and networking sites to help identify employment opportunities.

“Savvy employers look to Veterans for the excellent training and unique experiences they bring to the civilian workforce,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “Now, Veterans can have state-of-the-art access to official data about their military service that we will help them land meaningful jobs.”

Starting Dec. 3, Veterans can use the VA’s online My HealtheVet portal (www.myhealth.va.gov) to see official information about their military service, including deployment data, in-uniform experience, and Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) codes which define the type of work performed and skills learned during their tour of duty. Veterans can electronically download that information to their personal computers by using an enhanced version of the Blue Button. This new capability is the latest addition to a growing suite of job-hunting tools announced by President Obama on Nov. 14.

“The President and Secretary Shinseki have shown real leadership on Veterans Employment,” said Dr. Peter L. Levin, chief technology officer at Veterans Affairs. “The White House has been instrumental in guiding this public/private initiative to meet the needs of Veterans, and with promoting web-based services that help Veterans find jobs. With their MOS codes, Veterans can more easily substantiate that they possess the skills needed by employers.”

Several industry partners have signed up to create — or have even already implemented — third-party applications that can read military specialties or classification codes in Blue Button format, automatically translate those codes into civilian descriptions, and identify openings and other resources for Veterans, Levin added.

Military job information available to Veterans under this program will depend on discharge or retirement date.

· All Veterans discharged after 1980 will see military specialty or classification codes;

· Some Veterans discharged between1975-1980 will see military specialty or classification codes;

· Some Gulf War Veterans may see combat pay and deployment periods;

· All Post-9/11 Veterans will see combat pay and deployment periods

Veterans enrolled in VA health care can access their military service information through My HealtheVet. Veterans who have not yet signed up for My HealtheVet access can register for a My HealtheVet account at any VA medical center by completing a one-time identity-verification process to help assure their data privacy.

A new Christmas Carol for spouses of the deployed!

A sense of humor is not optional for the military life… not if you want the military life AND your sanity too! Love this!

LYRICS:

In the first stage of deployment my true love said to me…
I miss you and you miss me
In the second stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Chocolate’s not a food group (it is when you’re deployed)
In the third stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Buy something pretty (don’t have to ask me twice)
In the forth stage of deployment my true love said to me…
I think we’ve been extended
In the fifth stage of deployment I called up my true love…
I just had your baby!
In the sixth stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Don’t believe the president (…)
In the seventh stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Wine’s not a food group either (my food pyramid disagrees with you)
In the eighth stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Stop spending money! (Just try and stop me)
In the ninth stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Are you renovating? (I always do when you are gone)
In the tenth stage of deployment my true love said to me…
Where are my model airplanes? (packed up in the garage, where hey should be)
In the eleventh stage of deployment my true love said to me…
You should shave your legs now (ha ha ha ha ha)
In the twelfth stage of deployment… if ever that day comes…
Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir? (Yes please)

A day we better never forget

It was this day 70 years ago when war was first brought to our shores. Unfortunately it would not be the last time it would happen. It happened in 1993 at the World Trade Center and again in 2001.

Map of Pearl Harbor with my son pointing to USS Arizona

For many young people I am afraid that the significance of Pearl Harbor has been lost on them. Besides seeing a movie about it or just hearing about it, I don’t think the up and coming generations of today realize what a significant day this really is. It was 9/11 times 1000 in my opinion. It was not a rogue bunch of idealogical terrorists, but rather a nation-state that deliberately planned and executed an attack against us unprovoked. Our might pacific fleet sat almost defenseless as the Japanese unleashed wave after wave of attack against them and the civilians of Hawaii.

It was as noted, “a day that will live in infamy”. I really hope that holds true and does not become a day forgotten and ignored. May God Bless all of those that endured that attack and their families who have and probably still suffer today.

Jack Daniel’s “Operation Ride Home”

The Jack Daniel Distillery has launched the “Operation Ride Home” campaign, an effort to assist soldiers and their families in traveling home for the holidays.

The famed distillery has joined forces with the Armed Services YMCA of Fort Campbell that will work with military officials at the installation to identify soldiers and families with particular needs and financial assistance for travel from the base to their homes throughout the U.S. this holiday season.
In honor of the decorated 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Jack Daniel’s has donated $101,000 to launch the campaign and is encouraging its friends to visit www.JDOperationRideHome.com and contribute what they can to assist in the effort. The Armed Services YMCA will be purchasing plane tickets and providing pre-paid debit cards for gas, lodging and food for soldiers and their families to travel to their family homes. The 101st Airborne Division has members serving from all over the U.S. and has been on multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

“There are so many enlisted soldiers with families who would love to go to their homes for the holidays, but just don’t have the means to do it,” said Jeff Arnett, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “These heroes have been serving our country on multiple deployments overseas and we just want to do what we can to help reunite them with their families during this special season. After all, it’s not what is under the Christmas tree, but who is around it.”

Armed Services YMCA Executive Director Shirley West said the Operation Ride Home campaign could potentially help hundreds of soldiers and their families travel to their respective homes from Christmas through the new year. “The military does an outstanding job getting our soldiers back to base from deployments, but unfortunately so many of them just don’t have the money to leave the base – whether that’s money for a plane ticket if they live far away from the base or even gas money if they’re closer to Fort Campbell. This campaign will be a huge help in reuniting these families,” West said.

Armed Services YMCA of Fort Campbell is one of 16 dedicated branches of the ASCY national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It provides support services to military service members and their families all over the world, with a particular focus on junior-enlisted men and women — the individuals on the front lines of defending our nation.

The Operation Ride Home effort continues Jack Daniel’s longstanding support of our nation’s military. In recent years, Jack Daniel’s has been collecting personal messages of support in the form of “toasts” to include in USO care packages, and has hosted 14 “stuffing parties” at military installations across the country. More than 150,000 care packages have been sent to troops serving overseas through the “Toast to the Troops” program.

Gillette Needs Your Stories as Part of $100,000 Donation to USO

In support of the men and women who heroically serve our country, Gillette and the USO have once again teamed up to provide a terrific opportunity for You Served readers to show your support for our service members. You can participate in this great cause by submitting stories and photos of individuals who inspire you through their commitment to serving our country.

Now through December 31st, Gillette will donate $1 to the USO for every picture or story posted of a service member in your life to the Gillette Facebook page. To participate, all you need to do is visit Gillette’s Facebook page and share your pride in a salute, message, photo or video about a loved one in the military. The post can be a simple thank you, a military headshot or a more detailed personal story about your friends and family.

Gillette will help to connect deployed military parents with their children through the United Through Reading Program, inspire and provide educational programs through the Sesame Street Workshop, and enable families to send personalized care packages through the USO Care Package program.

Please help spread the word and share this opportunity with your friends and family to help uplift the spirits of families and service members this holiday season. The USO does so much for us over here in Afghanistan and they could truly use the money, especially after our USO here on KAF was virtually destroyed during the flooding and needs huge renovations.

Military Hiring As Troops Return from Iraq

With close to 40,000 troops expected to return from Iraq by the end of 2011 and the recent passing of the VOW to Hire Veterans Act*, a bipartisan-supported national bill to encourage businesses to hire military veterans, Sears Holdings is calling on all companies to do their part on an issue where the retail giant leads by example.

Sears Holdings recently committed to increase its veteran hiring by 10 percent over the next year, and it has been living up to its word. To date in 2011, Sears has hired 1,636 military members – up more than 200 percent from 2010 — 927 of whom were hired between Aug. 1 and Nov. 7 alone.

“With so many military members returning home, the support need increases accordingly, especially during the holiday season,” said David Works, a Navy veteran and SVP and president, Human Resources at Sears Holdings. “Sears has long made supporting U.S. veterans a priority throughout the organization – from numerous hiring initiatives and military-friendly policies to our Heroes at Home program and holiday Wish Registry. We are committed to providing resources for as many of our returning heroes as possible, in order to empower them and help better their lives.”

Consistent with its aggressive military hiring goals, Sears Holdings currently employs more than 30,000 U.S veterans, with more than 1,500 still serving in the National Guard and reserves, and thousands of military spouses. The Sears Associate Military Support Group helps maintain a positive work environment for these employees.

“Hiring veterans is not goodwill, it’s good business,” Works said. “Veterans provide our workforce with a high-level skill set built through brave service to America. They bring the advantages of being immersed in a training environment, and their technical skills, strengths in strategic thinking, and versatility are just a few of the very tangible talents that make them valuable to any employer.”

Another Sears Holdings policy – so military-friendly that it generates year-round inquiries about its validity – is the company’s offer of a military pay differential to its full-time associates who are reservists, serving on active duty. Reservists who are employed full-time are allowed to continue participating in life insurance, medical and dental programs.

“We’re humbled by how many calls and emails we receive about the military pay differential policy,” Works said. “These people are amazing employees and it’s the right thing to do to retain them in our ranks.”

Via its long-standing Heroes at Home program, Sears has supported U.S. soldiers, by rebuilding homes for veterans and providing gift cards to active service members during the holidays. Since its inception in 2007, the Sears Heroes at Home program has raised more than $30 million to help renovate 1,000 homes and improve the lives of more than 62,000 families.
