It was just a matter of time

It is no secret that both CJ and I are not fans of the repeal of DADT. In fact one of the arguments that CJ, myself and many other anti-DADT milbloggers have raised is where does it end? Who is next? Who will the DOD have to bow down to next to give them a fair shake? Necropihlia, Zoophilia, Transgenders?

Now I know you may be saying “Come on Troy that will never happen, you are being silly”

Am I?

But when she watched President Obama last month sign the hard-fought bill allowing for the ban’s repeal, melancholy tinged her satisfaction.

"This is another bridesmaid moment for the transgender community," the 51-year-old San Diego resident said.

The "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy now heading toward history does not apply to transgender recruits, who are automatically disqualified as unfit for service. But the military’s long-standing posture on gender-identity has not prevented transgender citizens from signing up before they come out, or from obtaining psychological counseling, hormones and routine health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs once they return to civilian life.

"There is really no question, it’s just a matter of when," said former Army Capt. Allyson Robinson, 40, a 1994 West Point graduate who has spoken to sociology classes at the alma mater she attended as a male cadet. "There are active-duty, as well as reserve and national guard transgender servicemembers, serving today."

Yeah, that is right. Before the repeal is even in place, the transtesticles transgenders have already started to push for “their” right to serve.

Build Day 1 Live Report

I’m currently sitting at the construction set of ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition watching as the skilled workers complete the walls and inside structure of the home. Later tonight, they will begin work on the second level and add the roof! It is simply amazing watching all these people come together to do something amazing for a most deserving family.

There are quite a few spectators coming and going as well. I’ve talked with a few and will post the interviews I recorded a bit later. Many are in awe of this entire event and every single person I’ve spoken to submitted an application to volunteer. There are only so many positions to fill and not everyone will get a chance to donate time when over 2800 people apply. Good on the citizens of Beaufort Country for showing such strong support for this project!

I was able to speak with Wayne Johnson, president of World Design Marketing, and he is very excited about his clients, H2 Builders, being selected to build this home. I’ll also post my interview with Wayne in the next few days.

Work is steadily progressing, and I’m very excited to bring more updates as the week goes by. Demolition day was yesterday and I have a full report on that coming very soon from none other than my beautiful wife, Anna.

Good Morning, Dickinson Family!

“Good morning, Dickinson family! India, Grant, Brianna, Bailey, Isabella, and Baby Sophia, we’re here!”

Ty Pennington and his design team consisting of Paul DiMeo, Jillian Harris, and Xzibit in conjunction with H2 Builders and a ton of volunteers are changing the life of Marine Corps family in Beaufort, South Carolina. Over the next week, they’ll tear down their existing home, build a new one, and bring the family home to begin a new life. But, there is one name missing, India’s husband and the children’s father Staff Sergeant Bill Dickinson who is currently deployed to Afghanistan defending Afghanis from tyranny and fear.

The morning started aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort when India and her children thought they were going to on base only to have a video teleconference with Bill. After the teleconference, they received the surprise of their life as they walked outside.

The iconic bus of Extreme Makeover Home Edition pulled up and out jumped Ty with his signature bullhorn in hand. As India rushed to Ty, dozens of Marines and family members rushed her and the children cheering. India and the kids were obviously excited and it didn’t take long for the tears to flow.

The Family's Home in Beuafort, SCThe Dickinsons are not only a joyous, playful, fun family — but above all, they are selfless and generous. Bill has served the US honorably for 17 years (and continues to do so) and the family volunteers and gives back to the community. Sadly, this great family has been forced to live in deplorable conditions. Because of Bill’s deployments and financial difficulty, the family home has become almost uninhabitable. Despite Bill’s best efforts to make repairs on his own, the list of problems is long: shoddy electrical, inadequate foundation, fire hazards and a dining room floor destroyed by a flood. The most pressing issue is that there’s mold in every wall, which is literally making the family sick, particularly 1 year old baby Sophia.

Todd Hawk, owner of H2 Builders, was present to help surprise the family this morning. “As a husband, a father and an American, I am awed at the personal sacrifice that literally tens of thousands of military husbands and fathers – and wives — are willing to make, every single day, in order to keep my family, our communities, and our country a safe and free place to live,” he said. “We are here this week to give our thanks to all the men and women who have given so much for us and for our country, by giving back to this deserving military family.” Finally he exclaimed, “This week we are all soldiers. This week we all are in service. This week we are all weapons for mass construction!”

SSgt Dickinson’s Commanding Officer, LtCol Russell Blauw, added after the surprise, “We have exhausted all the resources that we have in the Marine Corps and the Beaufort area to try to help this family and the bottom line is this house, it’s going to take something like Extreme Makeover to make this a reality to replace this home, to give this family a safe place to live.”

Ty, India and the kids returned to the teleconference to let Bill know what had just happened. You’ll have to wait until the show airs to see his reaction.

Soon the home that has caused the family so much trouble will be demolished by heavy equipment, dozens of volunteers, and of course United States Marines while the family enjoys some much needed vacation time.

Extreme Makeover Home Editions Helps Marine Family

Extreme Makeover Home Edition has moved their bus to Beaufort, South Carolina to help a Marine Corps family in dire need. Keep watch over the next week as I’ll bring you reports from the build site, personal reflections, and all the excitement that comes with Ty and his crew as they change the life of a most deserving family! The first post will appear tomorrow!

Please Write a Letter–UPDATED

Mrs. Behenna has let me know that Michael can receive letters, magazines and books, but the magazines and books have to be either directly from the publisher or from a distributor like Amazon.com.

—————————–

Michael Behenna’s mother made a moving plea for those of us on the outside who support her son, to please write him a letter and let him know he’s not alone. Her interview can be heard on the Youserved Podcast by downloading episode # 121 (the episode can also be downloaded for free on iTunes here). Michael Behenna was tried and convicted for killing Ali Mansur, a known Al Qaeda operative. If you want to read a very compelling story about how LT Behenna’s trial was a miscarriage of justice, please read this article.

I have looked around online for a guideline on what is and is not allowed to be sent to Michael and cannot find much, so to be safe, please just write him supportive letters.

If you would like to mail Michael a letter, please contact me at wendy@youserved.com.

Journey to Wellness

Editorial Note:

This past weekend a retired Desert Storm Combat Veteran and Chaplain wrote in with a heartfelt outpouring. Thomas, not his real name, recently sought assistance with combat related stress and anger issues from the Veterans Administration Hospital System.

Thomas’s tale of his family being torn apart due in part to stubbornness is all too common but very dire in its call to Vets in similar places and situations.

Below is the email he sent in.

I am writing this article for all my fellow Veterans. As the person going through this difficult task, I feel I am obligated to share this with my fellow Veterans. Some may read and think this article is written out of weakness. That’s a mood point, because this article deals with real life issues and the help available from the VA. This article is written on behalf of all our faithful Veterans. Especially, to those who have served our nation in wartime. The piece is written to make aware what help our Veterans Administration Hospitals truly provide in area’s of Post Traumatic Stress and combat related counseling.

I personally have always been a skeptic when it came to dealing with the Veterans Administration Hospital System. Even though I have utilized their medical care throughout the years.

A recent crisis struck home and I came to fruition that the VA does really care and wants to help. They are professionals and understand Veterans issues. They are experts in fields of combat stress and anger-management issues caused by combat related problems. They are there for the support concerning all counseling issues. Even those that might have existed prior to joining the military or had been enhanced due to a combat related experience. The VA system is prepared to meet the needs and concerns when it comes to counseling and supporting those that have experienced trauma due to their combat military service.

Veteran Hero At Giffords Shooting

Democrat Arizona State Senator Linda Lopez quickly began spreading false rumors that the shooter in the Gabby Giffords shooting yesterday was an Afghanistan veteran. In fact, Loughner, the accused gunman, never made it past the Military Enlistment Processing Station (MEPS) in Tucson. So, while our utterly clueless elected representatives and media were slinging ignorance and lies around the country, they missed the story of a REAL veteran involved in the shooting incident yesterday.

“I heard the shots but I thought they were fireworks at first,” Bill Badger, a retired army colonel, said in a telephone interview Saturday afternoon. “I wasn’t sure they were shots until I actually saw the shooter, and I was sure he was really shooting bullets when I felt the sting on the back of my head.”Badger, 74, said he was standing in line to greet Giffords and was the first person standing next to a row of about 12 chairs leading to Giffords.

“There was a couple standing next to me and I was speaking to them. When he started to shoot, I remember stepping back a little. I would say he was about 25 feet away from me,” Badger said. “I turned and saw him running down the line of people on the chairs. He ran between me and the store. Someone hit him with a chair and he flinched a little. That’s when I grabbed his left arm. Someone grabbed his right arm and we got him to the ground. The other guy put his knee into the back of his neck and I grabbed him around the throat. We held him until police got there. While we had him on the ground I saw blood running and it wasn’t until then I realized it was coming from the back of my head.”

So, where is Senator Lopez to hail the bravery of a REAL veteran? She’s hiding. She’s even taken down her contact information from her Senate webpage. But, that doesn’t mean she can’t be contacted.

Where Have All The Fighter Pilots Gone?

I got this in an email from a friend, so I don’t have a link to where it came from or any attribution. This is a good conversation about the firing of Capt. Honors for something that happened five years ago.

It is rumored that our current secretary of defense recently asked the question, “Where are all the dynamic leaders of the past?” I can only assume, if that is true, that he was referring to Robin Olds, Jimmy Doolittle, Patton, Ike, Boyington, Nimitz, etc.

I’ve got the answer.

They were fired before they made Major.

Our nation doesn’t want those kinds of leaders anymore. Squadron commanders don’t run squadrons and wing commanders don’t run wings. They are managed by higher ranking dildos with other esoteric goals in mind. Can you imagine someone today looking for a LEADER to execute that Doolittle Raid and suggesting that it be given to a dare-devil boozer-his only attributes: he had the respect of his men and an awesome ability to fly. If someone told me there was a chance in hell of selecting that man today, I would tell them they were either a liar or dumber than shit.

I find it ironic that the Air Force put Gen Olds on the cover of the company rag last month. While it made me extremely proud to see his face, he wouldn’t make it across any base in America (or overseas) without ten enlisted folks telling him to zip up his flight suit and shave his mustache off. We have lost the war on rugged individualism and that, unfortunately, is what fighter pilots want to follow; not because they have to but because they respect leaders of that ilk.

We’ve all run across that leader that made us proud to follow him because you wanted to be like him and make a difference. The individual who you would drag your testicles through glass for rather than disappoint him.

We better wake the hell up! We’re asking our young men and women to go to shitty places, never have a drink, have little or no contact with the opposite sex, not look at magazines of a suggestive nature of any type, and adhere to ridiculous Regs that require you to tuck your shirt into your PT uniform on the way to the porta-shitter at night in a dust storm because it’s a uniform.

These people we’re sending to combat are some of the brightest I’ve met but they are looking for a little sanity, which they will only find on the outside if we don’t get a friggin’ clue. You can’t continue asking people to live for months or years at a time acting like nuns and priests. Hell, even they get to have a beer. Who are we afraid of offending? The guys that already hate us enough to strap C4 to their own bodies and walk into a crowd of us?

Think about it.

I’m extremely proud of our young men and women who continue to serve. I’m also very in tune with what they are considering for the future and I’ve got news for whoever sits in the White House, congress, and our so-called military leaders. Much talent has and will continue to hemorrhage from our services, because wanna-be warriors are tired of fighting on two fronts–one with our enemies, another against our lack of common sense.

Emotional Cycles of Deployment

I found this a few years ago and thought it was very informative as to the struggles and stages we go through when facing deployment. I think the stages can be a little blurred and no one goes through the in a model way. The best thing to do is to at least understand what it is you are facing so that you don’t feel you are alone or ‘crazy’ when these things pop up. Read on!

Stage 1 – Anticipation of Departure
Stage 2 – Detachment and Withdrawal
Stage 3 – Emotional Disorganization
Stage 4 – Recovery and Stabilization
Stage 5 – Anticipation of Return
Stage 6 – Return Adjustment and Renegotiation
Stage 7 – Reintegration and Stabilization
