Interview with Mark Burnett

Yesterday I was able to spend some one on one time with famed Producer Mark Burnett. Mark has produced hit shows like The Eco-Challenge, Survivor, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader and The Apprentice. His latest venture is Sara Palin’s Alaska. Mark stopped by the Milblog Track panels yesterday at Blog World Expo to show us the very first public showing of this new show. We were able to watch the first 15 minutes of the first episode. I can tell you from what I saw I think it will be a hit show. Mark was involved with many, many more shows. You should check out the list of productions he has been involved with on his Wiki page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Burnett.

Mark was also a former British Para member and fought some hard, yet almost unknown battles in the Falkland Islands. When he talked about that to us at the milblog track he quickly became very emotional. A little about that battle can be found at http://www.hmforces.co.uk/Training/articles/1834-the-falklands-conflict-part-5—battles-of-goose-green-stanley.

As you will see in the interview below, Mark is a very outgoing guy who credits most of his success in life to his time in the military.

Sarah Palin’s Alaska

Mark Burnett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Burnett), the famed producer of many shows like Survivor, The Apprentice and Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader is here talking to us at the Milblog Track at Blog World Expo 2010. His latest project is Sarah Palin’s Alaska. As I type this he is showing us in the milblog track the very first showing ever to the public of the opening episode of the show. There is a public releasable clip on You Tube and I have posted that below.

The War Experience Project

This is a really cool project that I wanted to make everyone aware of. It was started by Rick Lawson and his wife in December of 2008 as a way for veterans to create dialogue on their terms, through art, using their camouflage uniform jackets. They’ve traveled this exhibit 12 times, showing it at an Army conference in Albuquerque, a city art gallery in California, even in London. Now they are transforming a commercial retail storefront in the downtown theater district of Tacoma, Washington into a veterans art gallery and loft where current and former service members can connect and create art without expectations. It will become a model to be replicated nationwide, where veterans can go to create and explore creativity for fun and as part of their healing process, while civilians can come to support veterans by purchasing unique, meaningful and creative arts and crafts produced by the veterans. They have partnered with Kickstarter to begin a drive for $10,000 in 18 days, to begin making this space for veterans a reality.

Please visit their Kickstarter page where you can view their video, and see the cool rewards for helping their reach our goal. Please watch their video and spread the word to help them reach their goal!

4Troops: The Mission Is Music (A Book and Music Review)

Unless you’ve been living in a hole, you’ve more than likely heard about the surprise success of pop band 4Troops. 4TROOPS are United States combat veterans – three young men and one young woman who served on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan. While overseas, music played a crucial and very personal role in all of their lives. They would sing at everything from large military events to more intimate settings, where they would jam in their bunk after a long day in the field and try to recall a slice of home. They also used their voices at somber occasions like memorial services, where they would sing to remember those that had been lost. 4TROOPS now come together for a singular purpose: to sing on behalf of all troops, to honor their sacrifices and to create awareness for their needs.

They’re touring all across the nation spreading their message of strength, hope and support to our nation’s troops out in the field. They’ve already been featured in network shows such as Fox & Friends and Good Morning America and right now they’re promoting the release of their first album, which camout on May 11th
and is available everywhere. iTunes even featured them on their main page when the album was released.

There is now a coffee table-style book out about the band titled 4Troops: The Mission is Music. The book is a good read, giving readers insight to the histories and military life of these combat veterans as seen through their individual eyes. Having left the military, the next mission has been realized in spreading words of confidence and support for our troops and bringing awareness to our troops. The story of how these four singers – Former CPT Meredith Melcher, Former SGT Daniel Jens, SSG (Ret.) Ron Henry and Former SGT David Clemo – came together is both inspirational and timely. The book comes with an exclusive live CD that features two of their best songs.

The album, which the book supports, consists of well-known positive pop and country songs and some new songs. All of the songs take on a special meaning in the context that they are performed by these four combat heroes. The first song is “For Freedom,” an inspirational patriotic tune written by Matt Moran for his grandfather, a WWII vet. Country star Toby Keith gives his blessing for a new version of his popular and controversial post 9/11 hit “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” to be included on the album with lyrics revised to reflect a 2010 outlook. Another country hit on the album is “Galveston,” popularized by Glen Campbell. This song made the CMT list of the ten greatest country-western songs of all time. Other tracks include “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan, Lonestar’s “I’m Already There,” and a new song written by Victor Hurtado titled “Here We’ve Been.” The album is produced by Frank Fillipetti (Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, George Michael, Pavarotti) who produced James Taylor’s Hourglass album which won Fillipettia Grammy® for Best Pop Album and Best Engineered Album in 1998.

An important element to the 4TROOPS project is giving back to organizations that support our U.S. soldiers and veterans. Sony Music will donate 50 cents from each sale of the 4TROOPS album in the United States to organizations that support veterans and their families. This donation will be split equally among The American Legion, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) and the USO.

Bottom line is that both the CD and the book are must haves for anyone interested in positive, upbeat, and patriotic songs. You can check out the band and find out where they will be touring next by visiting their website, http://www.4troopsmusic.com/.

Guest Post: Day at the Beach [Part 7]

Cuban Hutia by Silvain de Munck

We recently opened YouServed.com for contributions from all Military members and Veterans. SGT Hovertank, a nine-year Army Reserve Veteran and now a VA Mortgage Center.com Loan Officer, is our first taker.

Each week we post a new part of his article, “Day at the Beach,” recounting the Sergeant’s first-hand stories and observations from GTMO. Read parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 of the series.

This week: Aggressive Cuban wildlife

As far as duty assignments go, Guantanamo Bay was cherry. We learned from the FBI that you could rent boats and go fishing in the bay or up Guantanamo River. Kayaks and fiber glass john boats were also available. For those with the time and money you could also be certified for SCUBA diving. A shallow shelf about 300 yards south of the bay provided one of the finest diving destinations in the world. Probably the best part, however, was the island wildlife.

Guantanamo was home to a staggering population of the endangered Blue Iguana. Whoever is responsible for the endangered species list obviously never visited Cuba, because the nasty lizards were everywhere. A privilege of their protected status was a heavy fine for any soldier caught injuring or killing an iguana to include while driving stolen trucks. Ugly they may be, stupid they are not! Someone evidently tipped off the iguanas about being protected because they walked like they had an invisible force field. It was not uncommon for them to surround an indiscriminate picnicker and hold them hostage for french-fries. They are not classified as poisonous; but like a lot of their cold-blooded cousins they are scavengers and feed primarily on rotting flesh. Their saliva is toxic to humans and most other animals. I once witnessed a gang of them ambush an unsuspecting pigeon. The attack was so brutal it should have been narrated by Marlin Perkins.
