Congress Affecting Troop Readiness

On September 30th, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi banged the final nail into the adjournment coffin. Instead of dealing with the important issues that she and her comrades were sent to do – pass budgets – they went home to face the music and sure defeat. They may not have thought about (or even care) the consequences of these actions, specifically not passing the Defense budget.

Simply put, we have no money. That means that I cannot send Soldiers to schools to get training that will help them in combat or assist them in growing in their military occupational specialty. Those Soldiers that we can’t wait on to get training, must travel on “borrowed” money that we may or may not be able to pay when they return. I’ve had to literally cancel numerous courses that are necessary to prepare for major training events and our upcoming deployment. I’ve had to cancel training for our chaplains to be able to care for our troops and their families. Without this training, they are unable to coordinate spouse retreats that assist with marital bonding and provide counseling to couples.

And this is just one unit. All across the Army units are scrimping on training in preparation for deployments or upon returning from deployments. Our returning troops won’t get some of the opportunities to help them deal with their experiences in combat because Congress decided to take care of themselves than the people who elected them. I don’t know how this budget issue is affecting our troops in combat, but I can bet that if it isn’t fixed soon, contractors will be sent home, troops will be forced to eat packaged meals, and R&R trips may be cut short or altogether canceled.

We are fighting two simultaneous wars and instead of dealing with important issues like tax cuts and passing a budget, Congress finds the time to pass a bill that provides money to the State Department to give to FOREIGN COUNTRIES!! Our troops are suffering, but gosh darn it, thank goodness we can help the Ethiopians! They had time to pass the Plain Writing Act “to improve the effectiveness and accountability of Federal agencies to the public by promoting clear Government communication that the public can understand and use.” Good idea? Yeah. Necessary? No. They passed budget measures to fund NASA through 2013, but can’t fund the military in 2011.

Patriot Gina Elise featured in new movie “Red”

Over the weekend I got the following email from our good friend Gina Elise.

A few months ago, Summit Entertainment had contacted me, asking if they could use this pin-up photo of mine for the movie, “RED”, staring Morgan Freeman & Bruce Willis. I just found out that it made the final cut! “RED” was released today, so if you see it this weekend, be sure to pay attention to the scene where Bruce Willis is in a janitor’s closet at the CIA. This above photo is on the door, and the camera lingers on the photo for a while after he exits the room!

So if you get an opportunity to see the movie, keep an eye out for Gina’s poster in the movie. Also, don’t forget to check out her site at www.pinupsforvets.com to pre-order her new 2011 calendar and to vote for her in the Pepsi Refresh Grant daily at http://www.refresheverything.com/votepinupsforvets or by texting 103020 to 73774.

This week: Fun and mishap off the Cuban coast during R & R

Sometime in early March we finally got a holiday. We still didn’t have appropriate manpower, but at that point the military element cell had gone 36 days without a day off and I suspect LTC Buckhammer feared a mutiny. It ended up being a half day; we got off at about noon on a gorgeous Sunday. Although we had reserved a boat well in advance, because we didn’t arrive until afternoon all of the best crafts had already been taken and there was only one option remaining. We went ahead and checked out our ride before our skipper got there.

We had decided at the last minute to include a PFC that none of us really knew because he was licensed to operate the vessel and swore he was an experienced boater. Our cumulative experience with water craft was limited to me and Danny drinking and jug-fishing. The attendant at the marina was a rather high looking Jamaican in flip-flops. He wore cut-off jean shorts and a fishnet muscle shirt. The multi colored stocking cap perched on his pile of dread-locks did nothing to dissuade our confidence in his expertise while he briefed us on the boat. When we told him we were still waiting for our skipper he just shrugged at the tardiness and explained that “da puumpa ‘as been a litteel tricky, boot nut ‘tin to fear mahn.”

BOGUS SCAM ALERT

Past guest of You Served Radio and good friend of all of us here, Taco Bell, is doing his best to let America know when scum pose as war heroes and then try to rip off people by posing that way. His latest one is out over at The Sandgram.

Be sure to take a moment to read how the “United States Navy Veterans Association” is a fake charity association and see the pics of oxygen thief Bobby Thompson. Read it at http://www.thesandgram.com/2010/10/19/warningu-s-naval-veterans-association-bogus/

New Veterans Headstone Medallion

Veteran headstone medallions are available through the VA, which can be affixed to an existing, privately purchased headstone or marker to honor the deceased veteran’s status. The medallion will be furnished upon request in lieu of a traditional Government headstone or marker for veterans that died on or after Nov. 1, 1990, and whose grave is marked with a privately purchased headstone or marker. The medallion is currently available in three sizes, 5 inches, 3 inches, and 1.5 inches. Each medallion will be inscribed with the word VETERAN across the top and the Branch of Service at the bottom. Military Launches Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign

The Department of Defense (DoD) is observing National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by reminding the military community about resources and programs which help in preventing or stopping domestic violence. Domestic violence is a national problem that cuts across socioeconomic, age, gender, ethnic, racial and cultural lines. National statistics reveal that it affects more than 4 million people a year, with the deaths of almost 17,000 by their intimate partner and an estimated 2,000 children at the hands of a caregiver. The military faces the same challenges as society at large; particularly in light of the high operational tempo and strain it puts on Servicemembers, as well as their families.
