Interview with Toby Nunn from Soldiers’ Angels

Interview with Toby Nunn from Soldiers’ Angels from You Served Radio & Blog on Vimeo.

Toby is a good friend of all of us at YouServed.com and yes he and I are routinely referred to as brothers. We tend to look alike I guess. Anyway, Toby was actually the first interview that was done at Blog World Expo 2010, which is why it looks a little rougher than the rest. I learned some lessons from this interview. Hopefully you can hear it ok, and sorry for the sometime shaky video. Regardless of all of that, listen and watch Toby talk about how this year’s BWE was different and better than past years.

Valour-IT needs your help and support

It is that time of year again. Today starts the 14 days fundraising drive for the Valour-It project by Soldiers’ Angels.

Today, Thursday, October 28th, we will begin the annual Soldiers’ Angels Valour-IT competition. As you may or may not know, YouServed has been in the past a proud supporter of the Valour-IT competition. So once again VAMC and YouServed.com is stepping up to the challenge and hoping that you do too.

WHAT IS VALOUR-IT?

Project Valour-IT began when Captain Charles “Chuck” Ziegenfuss was wounded by an IED while serving as commander of a tank company in Iraq in June 2005.

During his deployment he kept a blog (an online personal diary, opinion forum, or news analysis site-called a milblog or military weblog when written by a servicemember or about military subjects). Captivating writing, insightful stories of his experiences, and his self-deprecating humor won him many loyal readers. After he was wounded, his wife continued his blog, keeping his readers informed of his condition.

As he began to recover, CPT Ziegenfuss wanted to return to writing his blog, but serious hand injuries hampered his typing. When a loyal and generous reader gave him a copy of the Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred software, other readers began to realize how important such software could be to CPT Ziegenfuss’ fellow wounded soldiers and started cast about for a way to get it to them.

At that time I had no use of either hand. I know how humbling it is, how humiliating it feels. And I know how much better I felt, how amazingly more functional I felt, after Soldiers’ Angels provided me with a laptop and a loyal reader provided me with the software. I can’t wait to do the same, to give that feeling to another soldier at Walter Reed.” -Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss at TC Override (wounded in Iraq)

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss (Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss’ father), provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries, amputations, eye or brain injuries, at major military medical centers. Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the ‘Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse.

THE COMPETITION

In order to fund the thousands of laptops we have distributed and need to distribute, we have an annual competition.

Valour-IT’s online fundraising competition begins today! Let’s see who can raise the most money to help reconnect our wounded warriors with the world!

WHAT: Friendly fundraising competition for Valour-IT. WHEN: October 28th through Veterans Day, November 11th . WHERE: Based in the blogosphere, spreading everywhere else. WHY: Because giving wounded warriors with hand and arm injuries access to a computer supports their healing and puts them back in touch with the world. HOW: Blogger teams will be divided along military branches, with civilians “up for grabs.”

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

I need you to simply blog and email regularly about Valour-IT and the competition with links to one of the Team donation Pages

Team Army donation page

Team Air Force donation page

Team Navy donation page

Team Marine Corps donation page

of if you just want to give and not help a specific team (even though you should help Team Army), you can click on the General donation page and give there.

Tell your friends, family and neighbors about Valour-IT. I’ll be providing media, links, and talking points for your Tweets, Facebook posts and blog posts, etc.

Another option to help is to purchase something from the Bouhammer Gear Store from October 28th until November 11th and I will donate 100% of the proceeds to Valour-IT. You will get a great looking decal, T-shirt, hat or polo style shirt and they will get some more money to help fund the Valour-IT initiative.

One last way to give and really get something cool is to keep an eye on the You Served Blog and Radio show ebay store starting the 28th of October until the 11th of November. Many in the milblogging community have been working tirelessly to get items donated that can sell there of which 100% of the proceeds will go towards Valour-IT. If the listing does not specify it is going to a specific team (Army, Air Force, Marines, or Navy) then the winner of the item must specify it after they win the auction. There will be new items going up all the time from Oct. 28th until Nov 4th. The items will each be listed for a maximum of seven days.

“Accentuate the Positive” When Encouraging Military Families

Accentuate the Positive: What does encourage military families?

Claire Shackelford and Carrie Costantini

Earlier I wrote about some pretty crazy things I have heard others say either to my own or to other military families over the years. Then I shared an email that a friend sent to me outlining some things that another spouse or two had come across (I don’t now the source of that one, but it’s good.) The last piece I wrote was a backdrop to this one and was a good primer on empathy — a way to care for other people that is costly to the listener. It takes time and it takes insight. It’s something that is intentional and takes some practice, but some people get so good at it that it just happens naturally. These are the people who never seem at a loss for the right words at the right time.

Today though I want to write about the positive at the suggestion of a friend and fellow military mom and spouse. When I had posted the first two she came up with a great idea of “accentuating the positive,” and here I am today.

The ideas below are from the interactions I had with Carrie and the suggestions she garnered from fellow military spouses.

Carrie’s opinion, and I wholeheartedly agree,  is that civilians should consider is “accentuating the positive.”

She stated “Upon finding out that your family member is deployed to a combat zone, maybe ask what their job is over there or say,”you must be proud of them.”

This is where I was getting stuck in trying to write a post. In the end, a simple,”tell them thank you for their service” can never go wrong.”

I agree. Even if you don’t know what to say then a simple act or gesture of appreciation is always appreciated back. Why? Because the sacrifices our families make are not subjective and they are not created in a vacuum. These sacrifices are created by war and by our loved ones’ response to war by joining the volunteer military to defend our Nation. There are a lot of things to be grateful for when you think of our soldiers standign in proxy for you and your loved ones.

Here are some thoughts from some other military spouses:

  • “Thank you for being there to support your Marine!”
  • “It is so much easier to remember all the bad and stupid things people said and asked. On Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2007 (I think; Eric was deployed at the time), a co-worker brought me a lovely flower arrangement with a card saying thank you for all that
  • I do as a military spouse. That was very special.”
  • “My husband said some nice stuff about me supporting him at his going away, and a very nice lady he worked with gave me a flower arrangement as well. That was totally unexpected! Just because I am his wife!”
  • “Thank you. We need more wives like you.”
  • “You make it look so easy.”  — This is MUCH better than “I don’t know how you do it!”
  • “The day that Will got back from Iraq, I got a call from an old friend of ours. He wanted to tell me before Will got home and things got crazy,”Even though you don’t wear a uniform, Carrie, you serve too.” And I don’t know that I agree with …him but I did cry.”

Interview with ArmyStrongStories.com blogger, Maj Ben Grimes

Interview with ArmyStrongStories.com blogger, Maj Ben Grimes from You Served Radio & Blog on Vimeo.

This is an interview from the expo floor of Blog World Expo 2010 with one of the many bloggers from ArmyStrongStories.com. Maj Ben Grimes is a Army Trial Defense Attorney who is also a blogger, which is a combination you don’t find often. Maj Grimes was kind enough to take a few minutes and talk to YouServed.com, so why don’t you take a few minutes and watch.

Tracker

I read this DoD press release with interest.

The Department of Defense announced today the release of a free smart phone mobile application that will make it easier for servicemembers and veterans to track their emotional health after deployments.

The National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2) developed the T2 Mood Tracker to help users monitor trends of emotions and behaviors from therapy, medication, daily experiences and changes in their environment such as work and home. It can be downloaded through http://www.t2health.org/apps/t2-mood-tracker.

So the question is, “why would I bother using something like this?”

Well, I know as a blogger, I can see my ups and downs in my writing. I noticed a few years ago that I get really down in the winter and I’m pretty sure I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder). If you are someone who is struggling with mood swings, depression, PTSD or anything else of that nature, especially if you are actively in treatment, a solid tracking method for your moods is an excellent thing to have.

As the website for the app says,

Doctors and therapists frequently begin an appointment by asking, “So how have things been going since I saw you last”? With this app it’s easy to answer that question by sharing graphs of emotional experience since the previous appointment. No need to try to remember how you were feeling last week. It’s all there, and the data were collected in real time. In addition, some research suggests that self-monitoring in and of itself has a therapeutic value by keeping people focused on the issue they are monitoring.

Hey, it’s free. And could be very useful if you used it on a regular basis. What do you have to lose?

Want to know where the Army is heading?

Then you need to try and make an AUSA convention in the future. As I said last night on You Served Radio, this convention is huge, if not overwhelming. Just about every company that works in the defense industry is represented here, along with many units and commands in the Army. The technolgies and capabalities being demonstrated here are some of what you will see in the Army inventory in the coming years. There are so many advancements being made in optics, armor, weapons, etc. that it is pretty numbing. Attendance at the AUSA summer convention is free, so if you are in the Washington DC area next year around this time, you should stop by.

Even the most harnded and experienced combat vets are amazed to see technology and solutions that were once only thought to exist in video games like HALO actually come to reality and exist.

There is a winter conference also, that takes places in Florida. Even thought it is not as big, the vendors are still there and you can get much more one on one time with them to see where their engineers and scientists are taking the warfighting industry into the next generation.

Veterans Day and Outback Steakhouse

Outback will be honoring all Veterans and Active Duty Service Members with a Free Bloomin’ Onion and beverage this Veterans Day (November 11).

“Supporting our troops and their families has been our longstanding commitment,” says Outback rep Becky Maree.

What began as a grassroots initiative in Tampa, Florida, when Outback was founded nearly 22 years ago, has since grown into an international effort! This Veteran’s Day they would like to say thanks to the men and women who have served to protect our country. I went last year and the line of veterans was incredible! These guys know how to take care of our veterans.

They would also like to invite you to share your military hero stories on their Facebook page next week. They will be honoring a hero daily as their Facebook profile picture and sharing your story with their Facebook community. Sharing military stories is another way they are honoring our service men and women. You can get involved by helping to spread the word and invite your friends to join them on Veteran’s Day by clicking here and sharing your military hero’s story and photo on the Outback Facebook wall at www.facebook.com/outback.

This is just a part of Outback’s ongoing support of those who serve our country.

Big Show tonight on You Served Radio

We have a star-studded show for tonight broadcast of You Served Radio. You won’t want to miss it. We will be talking to past-paratrooper and country-recording artists Rockie Lynne about his service, his music, his charities and his most recent album, Songs for Soldiers. Check out Rockie’s You Tube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/RockieLynne#p/u/0/q8vT-p2fBKs

After Rockie we will be talking to author Richard Lowry. Richard is the author of his most recent book, New Dawn: The Battles for Fallujah. Richard is also the author of “The Gulf War Chronicles”, “US Marine in Iraq: Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003″ and the award winning “”Marines in the Garden of Eden”. We will be talking to Richard about his latest book which (in my opinion) is the most detailed account of what is probably known as the most pivotal battle of the war in Iraq.
