Special 9/11 Tribute show on You Served Radio

On tonight’s show we are so honored to welcome as a guest Mr. Garry Trudeau. Garry is the acclaimed satirist and comic artist of Doonesbury. We are going to talk to Garry about his strip and some of the characters he has developed since 9/11. We will discuss BD’s role mentoring Toggle and the creation of Toggle himself. We will also talk with Garry about his creation and The Sandbox milblog website and book featuring milblogs from many popular bloggers and the efforts he has put forth in raising money for The Fisher House foundation. Last but not least we will talk with him about what it was like for him as a resident of NYC to live through the day of 9/11/01 and how he has seen the city change.

Garry will be the only physical guest on tonight as the rest of the night will be dedicated to honoring some of those lost on 9/11. We will read stories of the lives of some of those lost at The Pentagon, at the WTC, and in Pennsylvania. It will be a night to read and reflect on those lives that were taken from us as a country and more importantly from those who loved and knew them.

We really hope you can join us tonight for this momentous evening on You Served Radio.

You Served Radio raising money for Soldier’s Angels

The You Served Radio cast and VAMortgageCenter.com have decided to switch up some things for our ebay store during the month of September. As you may or may not know, we here at You Served have a ebay auction store up where we auction off brand new items donated to the store from our guests on You Served Radio. You can check out our Ebay Store at http://stores.shop.ebay.com/userved

We have normally been donating this money to The Fisher House which is a more than deserving charity organization. However in this month we wanted to see if we could get more bids if all auction sales went to Soldier’s Angels. We post new items every Thursday and they run for one week. The items are always changing and are typically signed items by the artist/author/musician or they are just really good deals on great brand new things. The people that donate these items so it specifically for the purpose of helping us raise money for the great charities that we do.

As an example, this week (ending Thursday Sept. 10th) we have the book Intrepid: The Epic Story of America’s Most Legendary Warship. This is a brand new item and currently has only a $1.99 bid. This book is selling on Barnes&Noble.com for $21.56. You can get it for a lot less and have 100% of the proceeds go towards the Soldier’s Angels foundation. We also have up signed copy of SGT Murphy: A PVT Murphy’s Law Collection by Mark Baker.

After these items end on Thursday at 11:47 AM on Thursday two new items will go up a few hours later.

So Please help us here at You Served help Soldier’s Angels.

Hero of the Week

I know CJ normally posts the Hero of the Week, but I have been in contact with someone close to this young man and I thought it would be nice to recognize him. He is connected to some incidents that I wrote about on my main blog at Bouhammer.com  which is how I came into contact with these people that know PV2 Lansing. 30AUG MW of Day (PV2 Lansing)-1

Lynndie England Sues Biographer

Scum of the earth Lynndie England is suing Gary Winkler, the author of the recent biography “Tortured: Lynndie England, Abu Ghraib and the Photographs That Shocked the World.”

What’s interesting here is that England and her representation are actually blaming Winkler for the lack of sales because England wasn’t listed as an author on the front of the book. Really?! What right-minded, educated individual would actually think that anything with England’s name on it would sell. The reason, I think, the book is doing so poorly now is that England is going around to book signings as if she WERE an author.

Winkler denies any wrongdoing and says he welcomes a Sept. 23 hearing in Hampshire County Circuit Court. Check out interview with the book’s author, Gary Winkler, at our radio show and podcast page.

Update on the LT Cull Situation

The town of Whitewater, after some wrangling with the fear of liability issues, has voted and passed the motion to “donate” $3730.97 to the American Legion to apply towards LT Cull’s repair bill.  As of tonight, the total bill was $13,320.97.  $9600 of it was for repairing his foundation which the insurance gentlemen at the meeting said was not caused by the sewage backup (from previous experience and data).

LT Cull is still on the hook for $9600 and the local American Legion, Rotary Club, VFW, and other organizations are doing a fundraiser on October 24th.

In the end, this young man needs to focus on the mission, his men, and himself, not this issue.  There have been a lot of emails from the city, his friends, and he has a lawyer.  He should just come back from missions and worry about his team and decompressing.  I hope that between the city’s “donation” and the fundraiser, this can be lifted from his back so he can do his job without distractions.

If there are futher updates, I will let CJ or Troy know so they can post it.

Commissary Case Lot Sale — Worldwide Event

Check out the press release below from Commissaries.com

And below that is a page that lists military installations alphabetically so you can find out when the sale at your local commissary will be.

Commissary Case Lot Sale Shoppers Swarm Their Stores For Worldwide Event

By Carrie Williams

Fort Lee, Va. – If you clip coupons till the Sunday paper looks like Swiss cheese, you might be a commissary shopper. If you are so good at managing your grocery budget you have extra money in your checking account, you might be a commissary shopper. If you have ever gotten up at dawn and waited in line to buy bargains in bulk, you just may be a commissary shopper of the case lot sale variety.

All kidding aside, shopping at your local commissary case lot sale can earn you some serious savings.

“Shopping regularly at your local commissary saves you an average of 30 percent or more as compared to grocery stores outside the gate,” said Patrick Nixon, DeCA director and chief executive officer, “but there are even bigger savings to be had at commissary case lot sales – up to 50 percent or more.” And who can’t use a little extra cash in their pocket?

Donations needed for COIN Reference Library

The Counterinsurgency Academy is located in Kabul, Afghanistan at the base of the ruins of the Queens castle. The purpose of the Academy is to teach and expand the doctrine of population centric concepts for operations in Afghanistan, and beyond. The contributions the Academy is making to Gen. McChrystal’s strategy can not be understated, nor can the challenges of implementing an expanded doctrine of population centric operations.

In an attempt to support the operations of the Academy, as well as the many soldiers that attend and instruct here, I have developed a "wish list" on Amazon.com of books in hopes of creating an Honorary Counterinsurgency Learning Library made up entirely of donations from our communities back home. The intent is to further expand the awareness of culture, methods and operations that promote the end goal of national unity, governance and security for the people of Afghanistan.

To find the list, all you need to do is log into Amazon.com, click on "Wish Lists" and then on the right side of the page in the search window for "Wish Lists" type in:
counterinsurgency.institute@gmail.com
The name of the wish list is: COIN Library – Kabul.

I am continually being asked about donations for soldiers and items of need. This list, though only in the initial phases of development, is something that will have a lasting use and impact on the soldiers here at the Academy and the students of the Academy who eventually take what is learned here and apply the concepts downrange. If the interest is there to support the soldiers by way of donations, I would encourage you become involved in this effort through Amazon.com. The shipping address is listed through the "Wish List." If you wish to donate another book for the library not listed on the list, or wish to purchase a book from another source other than Amazon.com, the same mailing address applies. For reference, the mailing address here at the academy is listed below:

Flyleaf Entertains the Troops

Flyleaf
North Shore Journal has a post up of another great band that visited deployed troops. I’m a Flyleaf fan as well, so it’s good to see that they support our troops. And if any bands out there wonder if visiting the troops will make any difference, just read this:

“We spend so much time worrying about what we don’t have and struggling to forget how dangerous our line of work is,” said Sgt. Megg Streva, 1-12 INF mechanic. “Then a band like Flyleaf comes all the way out here to give us a part of normalcy back and thank us for what we’re doing…it reminds us why we’re here and who were fighting for.”

Warrior of the Week – CPT Darby Boudreaux

CPT Darby Boudreaux
Everyday Soldiers of the U.S. Army fight to protect our country, our families and our lives. Many have given the ultimate sacrifice. Many, even after suffering traumatic injuries of war, continue to serve.

Captain Darby Boudreaux, 225th Engineer Brigade, was severely injured by an improvised explosive device on May 25, 2005 in a route clearance mission near Ghazaliya in western Baghdad. A minor artery was severed in his right leg and he lost a significant amount of blood.

Boudreaux spent the next three months recovering and going through painful rehabilitation.

Even with life threatening injuries, Bourdreauz says that the most traumatic part of the whole ordeal was not the impact of the blast or how close he came to death, but the fact he had to leave his Soldiers behind.

So four years later, he convinced his command to allow him to return to Iraq.

Currently, Boudreaux is the officer in charge and an instructor at the 225th Engineer Brigade Task Force Iron Claw Academy. He uses his near death experience to give Soldiers a chance at success and a better chance to stay alive by teaching Improvised Explosive Device identification.

Even with pieces of metal still lodged inside his body, Cpt. Boudreaux is satisfied that he was able to finally complete his mission on the battlefield.

For his heroism on the battlefield and his commitment to his Soldiers, Cpt. Darby Boudreaux is this week’s Warrior-Soldier of the Week.
