Send Me

One of the goals of the media and anti-war activists is to convince the American public that Soldiers can’t take any more. Our morale is in the toilet. We can’t keep in good Soldiers. Citizens aren’t signing up for voluntary service. We’re a bruised and broken military. But, those statements couldn’t be further from the truth.

Almost on a daily basis, I get requests from Soldiers asking if there are deployment slots they can volunteer for. I’m currently the First Sergeant in an atypical unit that doesn’t deploy for the most part. However, from time to time, we do get requests for Soldiers to fill slots with other units deployed or getting deployed. We have never had a shortage of Soldiers willing to volunteer for those slots. Yesterday, as do almost every week, I was asked if I could check to see if there are any slots they could volunteer for in Iraq. We’re not broken and our morale is fine.

The military has exceeded not only its retention goals of Soldiers ALREADY in the military, most of whom have combat experience, but also in enlistments. Some will try to say that it’s because of the money and other promises, but I don’t think any amount of money could convince an unpatriotic American to join the military knowing that they will most likely end up in combat.

Soldiers never cease to amaze me with their positive attitudes and “send me” mentality.

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.” – Isaiah 6:8
