AMERICAN HERO AWARD NOMINEE - Steve Stephens

Steve Stephens

Sgt. Steve Stephens is one of the first soldiers that I supported through AnySoldier.com. His initial post caught my eye...he asked, not for things for himself, but supplies for needy Iraqis. He admitted that he was scared, but saw hope for Iraq in the smiles on the children’s faces.

Though he has now returned home, he left a legacy which another soldier, Major Alex Stephenson, has now taken over. That legacy is to be found on the site: http://www.blankets.com/iraq-soldiers-donations.html
Through the blankets.com, Sgt. Stephens collected over three thousand blankets for the Iraqi citizens. He volunteered to receive and distribute the blankets, and organized fellow soldiers to help. I am so honored to have supported this soldier and his group through the any soldier program. He is a stellar example of the type of people that defend our country.

"Soldiers Helping Those in Need" is a completely voluntary program on the part of individual soldiers, with no government involvement. According to Stephens, "Thousands of Iraqi people have no heat or electricity. It is the mission of an idea to make a positive difference in many lives, and as simple as a blanket may be to those back home, a blanket to those that have nothing is more of a necessity then it is a want."

Stephens, a former basketball player at the University of Oregon, has created a number of other charitable programs in the past, including swimming 10 miles for pediatric cancer patients, and 24 hours for victims of domestic abuse in Las Vegas. He is also writing a book, "Meditations on Life through the Eyes of a Soldier.

One participant in the blanket program said, "I got my church involved in his project and spearheaded the efforts back here to get other churches involved as well ... I am so pleased to know that his cause will carry on even after he leaves Iraq."
