Winner Profiles
John Parker - U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.)

John wrote a powerful essay about his time in the U.S. Coast Guard to earn a scholarship for his daughter Emily, who he describes as his hero. John's essay outlined his years growing up, his time as a member of the Coast Guard, and the four main reasons he chose to serve. John's strongest reason for being a part of the Military was the chance to administer humanitarian aid throughout the world.
John described his long term career goals as, "Simply to support and encourage Emily to seek a career which is fulfilling and relationships which bring happiness in her life. The same applies to the rest of my family."
Stacey Lang - Army Reserve Soldier

Stacey, a full time student at Youngstown State University, is studying to become a dental hygienist in order to teach others about the importance of oral health. Sharing this type of knowledge is one of the many lessons Stacey learned while serving in the US Army for the past 11 years. She plans to continue her goal of teaching others by getting her Masters degree in education.
When asked to describe her military experience, Stacey said, "The decision to join the Army has truly changed my life for the better. If I never enlisted, I would have never been to see the world with my own eyes. I now know that I never have to settle for mediocre. I will always be pushing myself to do more. Once I attain a goal I have set for myself, I set a new one. I hope that I can live up to the public's standards of an American Soldier. Even more, I hope that I can live up to my own personal standards, which are extremely high. I feel that I can help make a difference in today's Army and the community, no matter how big or small it may be."
Ann Little - Army Veteran

Ann Little initially joined the Army for the tuition benefits, but after the September 11 attacks her reasons for serving our country changed drastically. What began as just a job became an obligation for Ann. Ann's winning essay described the lessons she's learned about humility, love, and determination. Currently she is showing that determination by pursuing a dual major in Political Science and History with minors in Jewish Studies and Psychology at SUNY Purchase College.
Ann has many role models who have inspired her on her journey, she described one in particular when she said, "The one that comes first to my mind though is my big brother. He's not only an Army Reservist but also NYPD. He's constantly supported me and pushed me to succeed. He is a constant source of stability for me regardless of how uncertain things get."
