Minority Veterans and VA Programs

The Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes that minority veterans have a need for support and more awareness of minority issues. That is why the VA has programs specifically for minority veterans. Like all other veterans, minority veterans can participate in the many benefits the VA offers like The VA Home Loan Guarantee Program, The Montgomery GI Bill, Healthcare benefits, Disability benefits, Grant Programs, Specially Adapted Housing Program, and many more. Even with entitlement in all of these programs minority veterans are offered even more support by the VA.

Some of the ways the VA works to support minority veterans include:

  • The Minority Veterans Coordinator.
In an attempt to educate and create awareness about minority issues, Minority Veterans Program Coordinators can be found at National Cemeteries, VA Regional Service Centers, and Healthcare facilities. Minority Veterans Program Coordinators try to get minority veterans to take advantage and participate in VA benefits programs. The Minority Veterans Program Coordinators also have outreach programs for minority veterans where they network with the community in order to offer better services to minority veterans and educate them about their entitlement.
  • The Advisory Committee On Minority Veterans
The Advisory Committee On Minority Veterans exists in order to support minority veterans by offering them help from people who have special training and are educated about minority related issues. This committee has the important responsibilities of reporting and advising Congress about how the VA is supporting minority veterans through VA benefits programs such as The VA Home Loan Guarantee Program, education benefits, healthcare benefits, surviving spousal and family benefits, and more. This committee gives Congress an annual report that looks at how the VA is currently servicing minority veterans and makes recommendations for how to better serve them in the future. Members of the committee also meet with officials from the VA and veterans service organizations in order to assess the programs and services to minority veterans and try to devise ways to get minority veterans to use and understand their benefits.
  • The Veteran Business and Economic Development Outreach Program
There is also a program specifically for the needs of minority veteran business owners called the Veteran Business and Economic Development Outreach Program. This program exists in order to aid minority veteran business owners and support their business endeavors. They will help educate minority veterans on how to start up a business, financing a business, how to attain government contracts, a working knowledge of contracting, marketing techniques, networking, relationship building, and more. This program specifically centers on minority veteran business owners in order for them to have a successful business and offer help to them in whatever area whenever they need it. They also hold conferences for minority business owners who want to expand their business.

The VA works hard to support and develop new programs for minority veterans. By understanding that minority veterans have special issues and needs that not all veterans have, the VA can assess and change programs to meet the needs of minority veterans in order to offer them the best services in the areas they need most.
