Minority Veterans and VA Programs

The Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes that minority Veterans have unique needs, which is why the VA has programs specifically designed for minority Veterans. Like all other Veterans, minority Veterans can receive health care and disability benefits from the VA and participate in many of the benefit programs offered by the VA, such as the VA Home Loan Guarantee Program, the Montgomery GI Bill, Specially Adapted Housing Program, and other grant programs. In addition, the VA offers minority Veterans other forms of support and benefits unique to their needs.

Some of the ways the VA works to support minority Veterans include:

  • The Minority Veterans Program Coordinator
In an attempt to provide education and create awareness about minority issues, Minority Veterans Program Coordinators are located at National Cemeteries, VA Regional Service Centers, and health care facilities. In addition, coordinators also have community outreach programs. Minority Veterans Program Coordinators try to educate minority Veterans about their entitlements and get them to take advantage of and participate in VA Benefits Programs.
  • The Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans
The Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans strives to help minority Veterans by offering support services from people who are educated about minority-related issues and have specialized training. This committee is responsible for reporting and advising Congress about how the VA is supporting minority Veterans through VA Benefits Programs such as the VA Home Loan Guarantee Program and education, health care, surviving spousal, and family benefit programs. This committee's annual report to Congress looks at how the VA is currently serving minority Veterans and makes recommendations for the future. Committee members also meet with officials from the VA and other Veterans service organizations in order to assess the programs and services offered to minority Veterans and formulate ways to get minority Veterans to use and better understand their benefits.
  • The Veteran Business and Economic Development Outreach Program
This program was specifically created to meet the needs of minority Veteran business owners and exists in order to aid minority veteran business owners and support their business endeavors. The goal of the program is to help minority Veteran business owners have a successful business. The program helps educate minority Veterans about how to start up and finance a business and attain government contracts. It also provides Veterans with a working knowledge of contracting, marketing techniques, networking, relationship building, and more. In addition, this program offers conferences for minority business owners who want to expand their businesses.

The VA works hard to support and develop new programs for minority Veterans. Understanding the special needs of minority Veterans gives the VA the ability to assess and change its programs to offer the best service to meet these needs.
