History of Military Jeeps

Although today when we think of the name Jeep, the first thing that comes to mind is an automaker with a line of 4x4 sport utility vehicles. However, when the Jeep was first introduced it was the nickname given to a military vehicle that over time was made by a number of different automakers.

The original Jeeps were made by Bantam, but the company soon lost out on the contact to Willys-Overland. Not long after that, the demand was so strong that from 1941 - '45, both Willys and Ford were producing the vehicles. Willys was later bought by Kaiser, which was later bought by Chrysler, bringing us to the Jeeps of today.

Even the name of the vehicle has a history all its own. It's widely thought to be the slurred pronunciation of GP, but what GP stands for has been a matter of dispute. Some say it stand for "general purpose" while others argue that the "G" stood for government and the "P" was the letter assigned to an 80-inch wheel base, which is the size featured on the model.
