For this year's American Hero Award contest, VA Mortgage Center.com received an overwhelming response. Our thanks goes out to everyone who nominated a Veteran. Presented here are our 10 finalists, chosen for their outstanding service to the Military and their country. Daniel Ashe
Aside from the details of Dan's military career, he is a hero to the people whose lives he's touched during and after his deployment. He met his wife shortly after his return from the war in February of 2004. They were engaged two years later and married September 17, 2007. He is the proud father of two children; Victoria and Jamie. He has spent the past several months as "Mister Mom" while his wife has been away at basic training fulfilling her dream of serving our country...

Steve Clark

Steve Clark
Not content with being a former AD soldier, Steve began a grass-roots effort to assist his small-town unit, not his own, with deploying by helping to organize a small town send off in grand style. Ever since then he has continued to organize office drives to collect goods for soldiers overseas. Often sending 15-20 boxes out every few months. To make this guy sound even more distinguished since he got back from Iraq in 2004, he recently completed his Graduates degree with honors.

Brian was in the Kirkuk area of Iraq when he started the idea of Any Soldier® to help care for his soldiers. He agreed to distribute packages that came to him with "Attn: Any Soldier" in his address to soldiers who didn't get mail. AnySoldier.com has connected people around the world directly to the troops, and is responsible for the support of nearly 1 million troops in only 4 years...

Todd Parisi
SgtMajor Todd M. Parisi of the United States Marine Corps commanded 500 Marines in Iraq, bringing each and every one home safely. He is the youngest Sniper Instructor in the history of the Marine Corps and has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service to the Marine Corps and country.

Brandon learned enough Arabic on his own during his first deployment that he was assigned to work in training the Iraqi troops. Brandon often translates for the local Iraqi villagers who come to the base for help. One day, a very upset Iraqi family was seeking medical help for their little boy who was in pain...

Eddie Ryan

Eddie Ryan
In September of 2002 he went to Iraq. He came home, went to sniper training, and then returned to Iraq in March of 2005. He was accidentally shot twice on April 13, 2005 by his own men. One shot hit him in the head. The other hit him in the jaw. EVERY time I visit Eddie he has improved... SEMPER FIDELIS! Sgt. Eddie Ryan never gives up.

Steve Stephens

Steve Stephens
Founder of "Soldiers Helping Those in Need": a completely voluntary program on the part of individual soldiers, with no government involvement. According to Stephens, "Thousands of Iraqi people have no heat or electricity. It is the mission of an idea to make a positive difference in many lives, and as simple as a blanket may be to those back home, a blanket to those that have nothing is more of a necessity then it is a want." Steven has collected over three thousand blanks for the Iraqi citizens.
