AMERICAN HERO AWARD NOMINEE - Gregory Anton

Gregory Anton
From Son:

My dad served in Iraq for one year. He was gone for more than two years though. Between his training before he left and the his being overseas then staying on active duty to train the new people going overseas. He was home only 3 months when we learned he had cancer. He was told this while he was at Camp Shelby, MS. he had to have surgery and then chemotherapy. After that he had to have his knee operated on. While he was gone to Iraq my grandmother died. He had to deal with all of that and Iraq. After his surgery he came back home and he ended up getting a divorce from my step-mom due to all of the stress from Iraq and his illness. My dad has custody of me and my brother so he is a single dad trying to make it with us and he is dealing with the VA trying to get some disability. We also get my sister about 4 days a week. He works full time and is trying to take college courses on-line on top of caring for me and my brother and sister. He is still having trouble with his knee and he has not been able to get all of his strength back since his chemotherapy. He works hard and loves us more than we can imagine. My dad is my HERO!

From Gregory:

I have been in the Military for 14 years now. I have three wonderful children. I have been to Iraq and returned to only find I had cancer. I went through surgery and chemotherapy. I am doing well now but am still struggling with PTSD and the after affect from surgery. I also had to have knee surgery since my return. I am now trying for my disability. I have been fighting for it for almost 2 years now. I work 50+ hours a week and it is taking its toll on me. My son Tyler has been a great help. He has stuck beside me through all of this.
