AMERICAN HERO AWARD NOMINEE - Daniel Ashe

Daniel Ashe

Sgt. Daniel Ashe was a Forward Observer for the 82nd Airborne Division, 2nd Brigade of the 325. He spent 7 months interacting with the people of Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His company assisted the people by getting them jobs at the food storage warehouse and training them to guard the food storage warehouse. They went into the schools to talk to the children, informed them about why the American soldiers were there and answered any questions about America. This alleviated any fear the children might have had of American soldiers. He went on foot patrols through Baghdad, Fallujah, and surrounding areas and provided security for the engineers going into Baghdad to build their first sewer system. During Dan’s time in the military, he performed 45 jumps, 42 from planes and 3 from helicopters.

Aside from the details of Dan’s military career, he is a hero to the people whose lives he’s touched during and after his deployment. He met his wife shortly after his return from the war in February of 2004. They were engaged two years later and married September 17, 2007. He is the proud father of two children; Victoria and Jamie. He has spent the past several months as “Mister Mom” while his wife has been away at basic training fulfilling her dream of serving our country. Now, he is not only a veteran but has experienced life on the other side of the fence as an Army spouse. He recently went to his daughter’s school to talk to her class about Army life and his own experiences. He is not only a hero to the Iraqi people who he has helped but a hero to his family and friends. The most inspiring thing about him is that he is modest and does not feel particularly special for his efforts. Dan carries the attitude of, “It’s all in a day’s work”.
