Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Veterans Day Special

I saw on Twitter this morning that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will be airing a Veterans Day Special on 11 November at 8/7C. Many of you remember my coverage of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build in Beaufort, SC back in January. I don’t have official confirmation, but I’m certain Staff Sergeant Bill Dickinson and his family will be in this episode. Read the PR after the break. Continue reading

Extreme Makeover Edition seeks military families (9/29 deadline)

Good luck to any of our readers who decide to apply for this opportunity.

‘Extreme Makeover’ Seeks Military Families

By Elaine Sanchez
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15, 2011 – Several months ago, the producers of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” asked me to spread the word about their search for people involved in the military to feature on the show’s upcoming season.

They got a huge response and selected an exceptional Navy veteran for a home makeover. A few months ago, I traveled to Fayetteville, N.C., to watch hundreds of volunteers build Barbara Marshall a new 5,000-square-foot home. The three-story home, dubbed the Jubilee House, serves as a shelter and resource center for homeless female veterans.

This episode — which also features a special visit by First Lady Michelle Obama — will kick off the show’s ninth season Sept. 25.

With that episode ready to air, the show’s producers once again are seeking people involved with the military to feature in upcoming episodes.

The producers are looking for people with “amazing strength of character and who put their own needs aside to help others,” they said in a news release. “Whether it’s a soldier, a mom, a teacher or a fireman, we think deserving families are families who inspire those around them.”

Additionally, the show’s producers are seeking families whose houses need major alterations or repair “homes that present serious problems for the family and affect the family’s quality of life.”

To be eligible, families must own their single-family home and be able to demonstrate how a makeover will make a difference in their lives.

Rather than apply through the normal channels, interested military families or people who wish to nominate a military family can email a short description of the family’s story directly to Jackie Topacio, casting producer, at jax@emhe.tv. Jackie told me she wants to make sure she reads every story submitted.

Please don’t wait to apply; the deadline for nominations is Sept. 29.

The email should include the names and ages of household members, a description of the family’s challenges, an explanation of why the family is deserving of a makeover or is a positive role model in the community, photos of the family and their home, and contact numbers.

For more information on the application process, visit http://abc.go.com/primetime/xtremehome/index?pn=apply.

Marines Raise Flagpole for Dickinsons

Marines raise a flagpole in the sideyard of the Dickinson family during Extreme Makeover Home Edition

Siding is up! The chimney has it’s finishing touches! The upper level porch ceiling is complete! Landscaping is in place! Half the picket fence in the yard is up! This house is really coming together!

A Marine family had come to watch the build. I know this family so I brought them into the media area to get a picture of them in front of the house. A group of folks attending a function in VIP tent with a local construction company. The builders sold two hour sponsorships during the build to local business to raise money for the family.

Paul DiMeo and Xzibit gave a press conference this morning. Xzibit is giving me a hard time in the first picture because I was the only media guy without a cool sleeve for my mic. Paul and Xzibit get share a few laughs with all the media present about the different mic sleeves.

IMG_5219 IMG_5220

Paul and Xzibit get down to business and discussed the build, what it meant to them, and answered questions from the press pool. I got to sit back and enjoy the press conference since all the TV stations were asking the good questions.

IMG_5222 IMG_5223 IMG_5229 IMG_5230 IMG_5236

This moment has been the most significant of the entire build for me. Marines marched the flag pole down the street and placed it in the side yard of the home. The Old Glory and the Marine Corps colors fly from it with pride. I do not have many photos of this, but I have something much better…video. Check back for that later in the day.

Within minutes of the flagpole being raised, the rain started and continued for the rest of the day. Rain plus camera gear equals ruined camera gear so I packed it all away for the remainder of the day even though I stuck around a bit to watch the progress.

Yet another day when I walked up to the house and was amazed at what had happen since I was last there.

Volunteers hard at work as always

I was completely fascinated with the gentleman working on the brick work leading from the road to the front door. He used a chalk rope to ensure a straight cut and then walked the saw through the cut. His talent was amazing.

IMG_5144 IMG_5148 IMG_5147 IMG_5151 IMG_5183 IMG_5143 IMG_5162

Two of my friends at the work site. I thought I spotted the gentleman in the grey several times through my camera lens before I was able to confirm it was him. The gentleman in blue walked past me at least twice and each time I thought it was him. He manage to call out to me before I was able to see him again. It was great to see them at the site.

The spectator area was once again well filled at all times. The weather wasn’t too cold and that provided a great chance for people to come out to watch.

My wife worked with this gentleman, named DiDi, the night prior. Anna had nothing but great things to say about him and he was a great guy. This was also my first last night excursion to the build site. Note the trim work that had been completed on the upper and lower levels since the early afternoon. The plastic on the lower level is in place to contain the heat they were pumping in to assist the dry wall mud in setting.

MassConstructionTshirts H2 Builders, as part of the fund raising efforts for the family, has designed some awesome shirts. They were initially sold at a pep rally that took place on 4 January to get everyone excited about the build and to raise money for the family. Build Day 2 in Photos

The following pictures were taken on Build Day 2 on 14 January 2011.

I was greeted at the build site this evening by this lovely lady and offered a massage. I couldn’t find it in me to turn her down, and let me tell you. That was the roughest 10 minutes of my life! She said something about lots of knots on my shoulder blades and how I must have had a long week. I think a long week about qualifies what I’ve had between the day job and media coverage. Thank you to International Spa Institute in Bluffton, SC for taking some of the stress from volunteers and media folks!

IMG_5030

The house has come a very long way in just 24 hours! The second level’s flooring has been put in place, the walls framed, almost every window installed on each floor, the garage has a roof, and trusses are in place for the main part of the house. Believe it or not, they were a good bit behind at this point but assure everyone they’ll be able to make that time up over the next day.

   IMG_5028

This young man lives in the neighborhood and was of my Badgers for Upward football last spring. I was very happy to see him both Tuesday night and this evening. He’s a great kid and extremely fast on his feet. He has promised me to come back out for football in the spring!

IMG_5032

Where’s Waldo, er, volunteer?

IMG_5037

Lots of work to do on the second level

IMG_5029IMG_5036

And prep work on the first along with additional work on the inside

IMG_5031  IMG_5038

Volunteers keep up the steady pace out in the front yard. There is always someone in this area working with wood for installation in the home.

IMG_5033 IMG_5034 IMG_5035

Working on the first level ceiling/second level floor. They were getting this ready for some flashing that would be installed a couple of hours later.

IMG_5039

Volunteers in the staging area after completing their most recent task. They were taken for their next assignment shortly after I snapped this photo.

 IMG_5040

And the most exciting thing I saw all evening…the front door frame (minus the actual door)!
