GEN Chiarelli retires

Past You Served Radio guest and true Soldiers’ Soldier, GEN Peter Chiarelli retired today. As is said in this video clip he did do more than another other leader to help our soldiers, combat soldier suicides and help remove the stigma of PTS and PTSD from our ranks.

I don’t know who will be stepping in to fill his shoes but I hope they can live up to the task and the high bar GEN Chiarelli has set by his service. I have no doubt that he will continue to serve our country in other way and am excited to see where he will end up. He has done more than his fair share, but he will be missed in the ranks.

Are you a vet looking for work?

Well then you need to check out the new video series that Nick Palmisciano (past guest on You Served Radio) , who is a former Army Ranger and CEO of Ranger Up has come out with. Nick has released the first of four videos giving sage advice and guidance on how to sell yourself as a veteran to a potential employer.

More great pictures of A-10 Thunderbolts

Since I wrote about the potential elimination of 5 A-10 squadrons earlier, I wanted to come clean and show some of the love I have for the plane. Yes all of these are and have been on my computer as part of my desktop wallpaper and screensaver rotation.

They are just too good not to share.

Don’t take away our A-10

I got an email from Air Force Times newspaper about the following cuts that the Air Force is going to implement as part of these cuts.

As part of the Defense Department’s efforts to trim close to $500 billion in spending over the next decade, defense officials said Friday that the service intends to cut five A-10 tactical squadrons and two other squadrons as well.

The Thunderbolt squadrons to be stood down encompass one active-duty, one Reserve and three National Guard units. The remaining two squadrons disappearing are a Guard F-16 tactical unit and an F-15 training squadron.

The move was part of a series of proposed budget cuts announced Jan. 26 at the Pentagon. Also on the chopping block are the C-27 and the Global Hawk Block 30; and as the ground force shrinks, the service plans to retire the oldest of its aging transport aircraft.

I can tell you as a career Infantryman I saw first hand the power of the Air Force and specifically the A-10 Thunderbolt. After crossing the breach from Saudi Arabia into Iraq in 1991 well before the ground war started I listened on the radio to the pilots talking as they came in on gun run after gun run “softening” up our objective before we cleared it.

Photo of the Day – The Sound of Freedom

I love the sound of jet fighters in the morning. JUST NOT AT 0200 IN THE MORNING!! ;) Living on an airbase has it’s ups and downs. Among the downs is having your entire chu shaken to the core and ripping you out of a dead sleep (when it comes) thinking the world is ending. I’m still not sure why afterburners are needed to takeoff from a nearly 2-mile runway, but I guess that’s the sound of freedom. I’m just glad I don’t live in a mud hut nearby. Otherwise, I’d probably be living ON a mud hut.

This is another picture I think is pretty cool. SSG Joseph Harwood did an awesome job with positioning the F-15 perfectly with the lights behind it.

A U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle receives early morning maintenance, Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, January 28, 2012. The aircraft is deployed here to support coalition forces providing close air support. These maintainers and this aircraft are deployed from Seymour Johnson AFB, S.C. One Seymour Johnson aircraft just reached 10000 hours in combat.

Photo of the Day – The Double

If I were to show you this picture without explanation and ask you what you’re looking at, what would you say? Odds are, you’d think this was a photo of a Taliban insurgent. The sad part is that you COULD be right. But, this picture is of an Afghan Local Police officer. This is the difficulty that our troops face here in Afghanistan. It’s a dangerous prospect if we see this guy and we’re wrong about him.

One of the things we’re trying to instill in the Afghan people is a sense of the rule of law of land warfare. Uniforms display a certain level of professionalism and, with experience and history, will instill in the populace trust and confidence.

Other than that, this is just a cool picture from PO1 Matthew Leistikow.

Photo of the Day – Yama Sakura

Yama Sakura is an annual bi-lateral exercise between the US and Japan. The term means “mountain cherry blossom.” The Japanese cherish their cherry blossoms and even donated the ones that are currently located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. When fully bloomed, the cherry blossoms sweeten the air and turn beautiful shades of various colors. They only last a few weeks before the petals fall of the trees. As a dependent I used to love attending all the Japanese festivals when my father was stationed there. The Japanese have a rich and historic cultural heritage that is just so impressive and unique.

VA Benefits Increase From Cost of Living Adjustment

Numerous veterans and their survivors across the nation will be pleased to see a little bit extra in their future payments due to a 3.6% cost of living adjustment that was effective 1 January. Federal law dictates that VA compensation and pensions will increase when Social Security payments receive a cost of living adjustment. This is the first increase in payments for both programs since 2008.

“Veterans, their families and their survivors are entitled to benefits that keep pace with the cost of living,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.

Many veterans depend on these benefits to help make ends meet every month. I applaud this increase for those that have given so much for their country, especially when benefits of both the active duty force and veterans are targeted for slashing due to the federal budget problems the country is facing.

Vote for Defending the Blue Line

Several weeks back we had we had Shane Hudella on You Served Radio from the charity Defending the Blue Line (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/youserved/2011/10/05/episode-162-defending-the-blue-line-kerry-kachejian).

Defending The Blue Line (DTBL) a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the spring of 2009 to help military families with the high costs of hockey and help ensure that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the great sport.

I have personally seen the benefits for military families from this organization. Well they recently announced that they are in the running as one of 20 finalists that help military families. The White House is looking to pick one of the twenty to recognize for the great support they do. They are looking for America to vote and I ask that you take the time to check them out and cast the vote for DTBL. You can learn more about DTBL at their newly revamped website at http://www.defendingtheblueline.org/

Defending The Blue Line was 1 of 20 national finalists in a White House competition to recognize a non profit that supports military families. The White House is leaving it up to America to vote for the winner over the next 30 days, similar to the contest we recently supported for the VA here in MN.

Please log on and vote via the following link, and ask your friends to do the same. Better yet, add it to your Facebook, Twitter, or other social media page. Make sure you go to the site once a day for the next 30 days to vote. When you get to the Joining Forces Community Challenge Website, type Defending The Blue Line in the search box.

Oscar Mike: Mission Accomplished

I first wrote about Oscar Mike one week ago asking you dig deep to give support and to tell all your friends. This morning I am happy to say that Oscar Mike is fully funded. Mission complete! Noah says this couldn’t have ever happened if not for people getting the word out and donating. He says he didn’t sleep last night as the final hours ticked down, and this morning is a huge blessing to him and the rest of the Oscar Mike crew.

BUT, the mission doesn’t stop here. You can continue to support Oscar Mike and OMFoundation to keep disabled vets “On the Move” in adaptive and competitive sports by purchasing gear or straight donations to OMFoundation.

Congratulations, Oscar Mike!
