Photo of the Day – ESL

The two predominant languages are Pashtu and Dari in Afghanistan. The third largest spoken language here is Russian, though. That makes communication somewhat difficult considering the tribal nature of the Afghan people. One of our teams recently told me they constantly meet women that have never even left their small villages!

A new school at Bagram Airfield called the Cat in the Hat Language Arts Center is teaching children to speak English. Our troops are doing more than just killing bad guys. We’re trying to build a literate society because a literate society doesn’t resort to crime and terrorism to be self sufficient.

Photo of the Day – More Flooding

We’ve been busy moving sites for where we stage vehicles and coordinate transportation of supplies. While Kandahar Airfield is a big place, it’s also packed with troops, civilians, and contractors. It almost appears as if there was no big picture plan over the years as the base grew. Buildings and units are scattered in ways that seem haphazard and random. Roads don’t seem to be efficiently laid out.

So, when someone is told to move, the logistics involved are immense. The sparse land that is available is available for a reason. Today, I visited the area that we’re supposed to be moving to. This is the area where we’re supposed to stage our supplies, vehicles, personnel and equipment awaiting a convoy back to the Pakistan border.

In this photo, the water is about up to my knees. This was taken today, four days after the flooding. In most places the water was only up to about halfway to my shins. I know some people would say that water coming up to my knees would only come up to a normal person’s ankles. Ha! I beat you to the joke.

Here’s a photo of a vehicle in another area of the yard – not where we would stage.

The water line is nearly up to the rooftops of these HMMWVs. Crazy stuff as we head into the Afghan rainy season.

All photos are mine.

Veteran’s Day 2011 in NYC

I was fortunate to be invited out to New York City to attend an amazing event held at NASDAQ OMX. It was to support the charity Cooking with the Troops. NASDAQ and several organizations worked together on Friday to celebrate our troops, past and present.

The day started with a surprise marriage proposal. A young wounded warrior who is on the way to recovery got down on one knee in Times Square and asked his girl to marry him. It was on Fox and Friends if you were watching that morning.

Photo of the Day – Kandahar Floods

Last Thursday night, Kandahar Airfield went snorkeling. According to sources, the heavy rains busted a water main, resulting in massive flooding on the base. The streets turned to rives as the ditches quickly filled with water and troops in barracks were advised to seek higher ground. The flooding continued until nearly midnight before beginning to subside.

On Friday, the only remnants of the flooding was mud everywhere, large pools of water, and debris scattered all over post. Some vehicles were still seen buried up to their lugnuts in parking lots and along the sides of the road.

Today, large potholes and pools of water are all over the place. The night time photos are mine, while the day time photos were taken by Senior Airman Corey Hook. My photos were taken the night of the flood.

Several sectors on Kandahar Airfield are flooded. Rainy season at Kandahar is November through May.

Photos of the Day – Meeting Locals

Photo of the Day – SFC Zeke

A few days ago, I wrote about an experience I had meeting SFC Zeke. I wanted to share a story written by SPC Darryl Montgomery about my newfound friend. I’m lucky enough that I get to see Zeke almost whenever I want as long as he’s here since he’s based on Kandahar Airfield. Something I also learned today is that Zeke is a blood donor for some of the other working dogs! This dog is amazing.

Sgt. 1st Class Zeke, a therapy dog with the 113th Combat Stress Control team visited Forward Operating Base Spin Boldak, Sept. 23, to greet soldiers and help alleviate some of the stress they incur while being deployed. In addition to getting to pet Zeke and play with him, the soldiers learned about his role as a therapy dog and about the programs the Combat Stress Control teams offer when it comes to dealing with tough times.

Photo of the Day – Trust

You can see it in the faces of Afghan youth. I can’t help but wonder if these kids will forget these tender moments of trust when dealing with our troops. I hope that 10-15 years from now they remember the true intent, heart, and mission of our troops here to secure a better life for them.

An Army Wife’s Tips to Curb Holiday Stress

We have been blessed to have Star Henderson and Tara Crooks of Army Wife Network on our radio show in the past. You can hear the archived interview HERE. Below is an article from care.com where Tara shares her top tips for beating holiday stress:

Tara Crooks knows all about the unique challenges military spouses face during the holidays, but she says that’s no reason not to celebrate. Mom of two young girls and co-founder of the Army Wife Network, Crooks believes in creating fun around the holidays no matter how hard it seems. In the spirit of the approaching festivities, Tara shares these great tips to get you in the holiday spirit.

1. Salute your soldiers. In addition to saluting their dad whether he is home or away, the Crooks clan makes it a point to honor all military families on Christmas. “We always hang a sock for the UNforgotten soldiers,” says Tara.

2. Let gifts come from you. In the Crooks’ home, Santa brings the unwrapped gifts while the parents offer wrapped surprises. “I always make sure the girls know the presents are from Daddy and Mama, and that he is with us even if he isn’t physically present,” says Tara. Continue reading
