Reports Of Family Violence, Abuse Within Military Rise

A report by the Defense Department’s Family Advocacy Program shows the number of reports of family violence within the military, which had been in decline over several years, has been rising over the last two years, and reports of abused children and spouses increased significantly last year as well. However it is unclear whether the increase is attributable to increased abuse or possibly an increase in reports by people who remained silent in the past, or better record-keeping. In fiscal year 2010, the rate of confirmed spouse abuse was 11.2 per one-thousand couples, up from 10.1 per thousand in 2009 and 9.4 per thousand in 2008. Prior to 2008, the rate had been steadily declining from 16.5 per thousand in fiscal year 2001. Photo of the Day – Silhouette Sunset

As I’ve noted before, I love these silhouette photos. This one really caught my eye.

A music video about PTS

I just finished watching the video below and I am still sitting here a little numb. What a great job Lorrell and the rest of the guys in La Res did making this. In addition to that Joe Harrell who was the military advisor on Lorrell’s movie “Happy New Year” does a great acting job in this video as the veteran with some long-standing issues.

Please take a moment and watch the video below and see if you can find the “shout out” they did to You Served Blog and Radio show!

Photo of the Day – Talisman Sabre

To fully appreciate carrier operations, you really have to be there. As a kid, I remember a Tiger Cruise aboard the USS Midway with my father watching aircraft operations from both the crow’s nest and below deck. It seems no matter where you are on the ship, you can feel every jet that takes off. The noise is glorious as the catapult shoots a 45,000-pound plane from 0 to 165 miles per hour (a 20,000-kg plane from 0 to 266 kph) in two seconds!

An F/A-18E Super Hornet assigned to the Eagles of Strike Fighter Squadron 115 is prepared for take-off from the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. George Washington is participating in Exercise Talisman Sabre 2011, a bilateral exercise intended to train Australian and U.S. forces in planning and conducting combined task force operations.

Photo of the Day – Petraeus Hands Over Command of Afghanistan

The man whom I believe to be one of the greatest generals of this generation handed over the reigns today to incoming CG, Marine General John Allen.

Army Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin L. Hill, International Security Assistance Force/U.S. Forces Afghanistan, passes the ISAF guidon to Gen. David H. Petraeus, outgoing ISAF commander, during the ISAF change of command ceremony held in Kabul, Afghanistan, July 18. Marine Gen. John R. Allen (left) assumed command of ISAF/USFOR-A from Petraeus.

While I have nothing to go on, I have an opinion about why Petraeus is leaving. It’s, of course, politics so I won’t go into it. Maybe I’ll put something up on my private Facebook page to avoid any possible accusation of having an “official” opinion. We all know opinions aren’t welcome from our troops on political issues. ;)

Unexpected affect of new BAH rates

I read this on Spousebuzz.com this morning. It’s often those unexpected consequences that hurt the most because there is no way to plan for them — unless one is a foreseer. How have you been affected?

Excerpt:
We learned at the end of last year that BAH levels would drop in some areas in 2011. We also learned that it was dropping a whopping 8% in our area. But we breathed a sigh of relief when we read that the drop would not affect those of us already living in the area. It only affected newcomers. Well, stinks to be them, but I still get my old higher BAH. Whew. And it sounded like it would work in theory:

Because of rate protection, only members arriving after Dec. 31 to areas where rents have fallen will feel the effect of lowered allowances. Those same new arrivals, however, also should face lower rents than did colleagues who arrived in 2010 or earlier, said Cheryl Anne Woehr, BAH program analyst for the Department of Defense.

Except the BAH program analysts forgot to take into account one catch: most renters are military personnel, but most property owners in this area are military personnel as well.

Connor Love showing his love for the troops

Connor still holds the record as the youngest guest we have ever had on You Served Radio. Connor was a guest on the show where we called him the Littlest Patriot. You can listen to it here,  http://www.blogtalkradio.com/youserved/2010/03/18/episode-20.

Well Connor has not stopped being a patriot, an awesome kid and an example to many if not all Americans. How can you not love this little guy for how cute he is and how much he does.

I talk with his Grandpa all the time and I can tell you that he is still sending boxes out, all the time. I am getting pics of them before they close them up. Please take time to watch this video, feel uplifted and share it with friends and family.

Online PTSD Resource

I try to find and share various online resources for PTSD and other things I think might be of help to our military families. The following source uses Eye Movement Memory Processing (EMMP) approach to dealing with stress. I do not know how effective this is (speaking true scientific results versus personal anecdotal evidence). It’s free so this may be a good way to try it.

This is a resource that you normally pay for, but FamilyOfAVet.com has 100 free sessions for Vets – first come first serve. Below is the information I pulled from their site:

One of the many reasons I love the people at Clayton Stress is because of their obvious
motivation to help our heroes and families!

In an awesome show of generosity, they’ve given us 100 free sessions to give away to 50
veterans or family members (each hero or loved one gets 2 free sessions) who would like
to try the Clayton Stress system – an online treatment program for PTSD symptoms that
can be completed from home, at any time of the day or night (that actually, really works!).

And here’s a little bit on the Clayton Stress system.

ClaytonStress.com, located in St. Louis, Missouri, is the leading provider of online computer therapy for stress, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms in the United States. It offers Eye Movement Memory Processing (EMMP), for relief of traumatic memories and is convenient, affordable, and confidential. Relief can be obtained quickly and results are lasting. It is the first and currently, only self-directed internet-based EMMP program and has a U.S. patent pending.

Photo of the Day – Marine Sardines

It never ceases to amaze me that some things actually fly through the air. Every time a C-5 does a touch and go at the Killeen Airport (within view of my office window), I can’t help but just stop and watch. I mean, these things are HUGE and look as if they’re floating in the sky. They barely move, yet they fly! I could understand a little better if they were empty, but holy cow! When you stuff a Marine Corps Super Stallion helicopter in there, it just doesn’t seem possible. I mean, really. LOOK AT THIS PHOTO!!

Marines from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, stationed at Camp Lemonnier, Combined Joint Task Force – Horn Africa, Djibouti, prepare to unload a Marine CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter, July 14, from an Air Force Reserve Command C-5B, assigned to the 439th Airlift Wing, Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass. Two CH-53E helicopters were delivered to augment readiness and support regional operations in East Africa.
