Birth certificates of Servicemembers and family members born in Puerto Rico are among those whose birth certificates will be invalid as of July 1. The government of Puerto Rico enacted a law invalidating old birth certificates in order to combat rampant fraud and security problems. Anyone who used a Puerto Rican birth certificate to enroll in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment System (DEERS) before July 1 will still be enrolled, and DEERS will not invalidate those birth certificates. However, starting July 1, DEERS will accept only the new birth certificate for initial enrollment.
