Father patches son in ceremony

By 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) Public Affair

On April 8, a Tennessee father placed a combat patch on his son’s right shoulder in Iraq, celebrating his son’s service at Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

Second Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) has been in country for roughly one month, and its patching ceremony was held outside of the squadron’s headquarters building, where Col. Jeff H. Holmes, the regiment’s commander stationed at Contingency Operating Base Taji, Iraq, patched his son, Spc. Hulon Holmes, a gunner with 3rd Platoon, F Troop, 2-278th ACR and Murfreesboro ,Tenn., native.

Jeff Holmes, also a Murfreesboro, Tenn., native, said it was an honor to put a combat patch on his son and he was glad he was able to make it for the ceremony. “I haven’t been able to attend all the regiment’s subordinate combat patch ceremonies, but it was very special for me and I wanted to make sure I was here for it,” he said. Jeff Holmes said these ceremonies typically happen after 30 days into a rotation. “This is a good chance to commemorate a Soldier’s service in wartime and in theater,” he said.

Jeff Holmes said many of the Soldiers already have a combat patch from prior deployments, but for those who do not, they try to make this a significant event. “It exhibits a lot of respect from one combat Veteran to the other, and a significant transition in one’s career to put one on,” he said.

Jeff Holmes said it is a rare occurrence that a father has a chance to put a combat patch on his son. “I wanted to seize the moment,” he said. This is Hulon Holmes’ first deployment, and he said receiving the combat patch is special. “It’s kind of an honor to be able to receive something like this, knowing that I’ve been here with these guys making a difference,” he said.

Hulon Holmes said it was an honor to be patched by his father. “I didn’t expect that this would be able to happen,” he said. “It was nice to see him in general, but for him to be able to put the patch on me, it was a great moment.” Hulon Holmes said he is proud to serve under his father and could not ask for a better assignment. His father was patient with him, he said, and never pressured him to join the military. “He left that completely up to me,” said Hulon Holmes. “Eventually, it just kind of got to me. I knew it was something that I wanted and needed to do.”

Flag To Be Lowered For Civil Rights Leader

Tomorrow, American flags will be lowered to half mast to honor the memory of former civil right leader, Dorothy Height. It will remain that way through sunset tomorrow evening. On April 12th, President Barack Obama ordered U.S. flags in West Virginia to be flown at half staff in honor of 29 miners killed in the Upper Big Branch mine explosion, something the President has no authority to do except for federal agencies. The Flag Code states:

In the event of the death a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that state, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff.”

But, he did it anyway because he thinks he can and people let him get away with it. Didn’t really matter, since Gov. Joe Manchin ordered the flags of the state lowered anyway a week earlier.

It’s possible that 11 people have been killed in the sinking of the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. I can’t help but wonder if the flag will for ordered lowered for them as well. Probably not, since it’s an oil tanker and we all what this administration thinks about oil! Instead, they’ll jump on the bandwagon to try and ban offshore oil rigs even though this is the first accident in over 40 years!!

Now, you’re probably asking yourself why I’m bringing this up on a military blog. Well, over the July 12, 2008 weekend (under President Bush’s watch) nine troops were killed in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan while fighting the Taliban. No flags were lowered in honor of these troops. On September 8, 2009 five troops were killed in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan. Again, no flags were lowered to honor the memories of these brave troops. On October 3, 2009, eight more troops were killed in an attack in the Nuristan province and no flags were lowered.

Yet, our government has been lowering flags for MINERS and OIL RIG WORKERS!! Am I the only one pissed to all hell about this? Why are our troops’ lives less worthy of American honors than these people. I know they work hard. I know they provide a valuable product to this country. I know they’re most likely red-blooded, patriotic Americans who work difficult jobs! I know that!! But this has to stop! Either we get back to what the US Code says the flag should be lowered for or WE LOWER IT FOR EVERY PATRIOTIC AMERICAN THAT DIED IN SERVICE TO THIS COUNTRY!!!!

EXCERPT

3/29/2010 – FAIRFAX, Va. (AFNS) — The military and the circus have a lot in common. They both have people from around the nation and assets from around the world. Both are highly trained units that perform sometimes unimaginable feats and handle unspeakable logistical details in carrying out their mission. And, most importantly, both share an important priority: children.

On March 26, this priority was at the forefront when Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey honored military families at a performance of its traveling circus “Zing Zang Zoom” at a performance at George Mason University’s Patriot Center here. Normally, a military family member is chosen as guest ringmaster as part of April’s Month of the Military Child. This year an entire family served as guest ringmasters in observance of Year of the Air Force Family.

Master Sgt. Cameron Rogers, the Air Force District of Washington UH-1N helicopter program manager, and his family represented military families around the world as the circus’ guest ringmasters. The 19-year Air Force veteran who just returned from a year-long deployment to Afghanistan said he was thrilled to be able to share this special time with his wife, Maggie, and children, 10-year-old Sam and 5-year-old Laine.

The Air Force’s top enlisted Airman acknowledged the Rogers’ presence and the circus’ tribute to military families.

“It’s good to see the Rogers family here at Ringling Brothers…and it’s good that this organization would highlight the United States Air Force and the entire military,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James A. Roy.

Chief Roy said military appreciation events like this are important because they highlight the sacrifices made by military families around the world and bring public awareness to their service. LINK TO STORY

I’m Pumped

Anyone that knows me, knows that I’m passionate about certain things, chief among them – the Constitution! I support the Tea Party Movement. I support the conservative cause of lesser government and more freedom. I support the constitutional cause of states’ rights. I support making people responsible for their own actions instead of legislating bad choices out of our decision making process in this country.

I came across this video today on YouTube and it pumped me up!! This country needs to change – REAL change! Granted we’re getting real change now, but it’s in the complete opposite direction we should be going in.

It’s so sad to hear people say, “we need to get back to the Constitution”. BACK to the Constitution? Does anyone realize the severity of that short statement? Why did we ever deviate from it?

Because we, the American people, are lazy! We elect people and then wash our hands like Judas of the decisions made after that. We figure if things don’t go well, we’ll just elect someone else in a few years. And back and forth we go. The problem is that problems don’t go away on election day.

We need to be involved at the local and state levels. I bet if you asked the next person you see who the Attorney General of their state is, they won’t know. I bet they have no idea who their STATE senator or representative. Sure they know their federally elected officials, but what about their state elected officials? We need to realize that real change happens at the state level and below. The federal government has so much power over us because the states gave it to them.

The good news is that I’m starting to see a positive shift in the right direction at the state level. More than a quarter of all states have filed 10th Amendment Declarations warning the federal government about state encroachment. Arizona recently passed a law to strengthen its borders and combat illegal immigration. Montana recently passed a law that federal gun laws don’t apply to guns bought and sold in the state. Several states are suing over the health care legislation.

The states need to go further. As long as states continue to suck at the teet of the federal boob, they will have control over the states. Federal dollars are used to control individual states. But, if states simply stop accepting federal funds and refuse to send them taxes they have to beg to get back, real change will occur in Washington. The federal government will again resume its Constitutionally limited powers and states will again regain their sovereignty. I mean, it’s just so absurd that states send all this money to DC and fight to get a “fair share” of it back! It makes no sense.

More Veteran’s Claims Need Review

Only a fraction of wounded veterans who could get better benefits have come forward in the two years since Congress ordered the Pentagon to review disputed claims. As of mid-March, only 921 vets had applied out of the 77,000 the Pentagon estimates are eligible. Of the more than 230 cases that have been decided, about 60 percent favor improving the veteran’s benefits. Any Servicemember who separated from the Armed Forces between September 11, 2001, and December 31, 2009 due to a physical disability, may have his or her case reviewed by the PDBR. The member must have a combined disability rating of 20 percent or less and have been found not eligible for medical retirement. Generally, individuals will apply for PDBR review through their respective military department. This Week on eBay: Rage Company and a Surprise

Rage Company Cover

On Thursday 29 May April, after the conclusion of our current auction, we will be listing Rage Company, A Marine’s Baptism by Fire (Amazon, Barnes & Noble) by Thomas Daly. The auction will run for one week and will conclude on the afternoon of 6 May, just a few hours before I interview Tom on You Served Radio. But what is this surprise? Keep reading! CJ and Troy don’t even know about it yet!

Rage Company chronicles Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines in their deployment to Ramadi, Iraq from November 2006 through April 2007. Readers of A Soldier’s Perspective will recall I was deployed to Iraq from February through September 2007.

Surprise? Yeah, I’m getting there. Hold your horses!

I am currently reading Rage Company, and it is making me remember a lot of things I heard during briefings but had forgotten about. I won’t get much into the book right now since I plan to write a full review after I finish reading the book and Tom comes on the show.

apple-ipad_2 Okay, I’ve made you hold your breath long enough. I’ve been working with Tom’s very lovely publicist, Callie Oettinger, over the last week on a very big something special to go along with the hardcover edition of Rage Company that will appear on the You Served auction block to benefit Soldiers’ Angels. The marketing department of Rage Company’s publisher, John Wiley & Sons, has agreed to donate one Apple iPad to this week’s auction. The winner of Rage Company will also receive an Apple iPad!

The full details of the auction will be announced Thursday and a link to the auction will also be published at that time. Until then, start hyping the auction to your friends and family! Remember that all money raised from our eBay story goes to benefit Soldiers’ Angels and the amazing work they do to benefit all of us serving our country.

Update: Yes, the date was supposed to be 29 April. Sorry about that!
