Just watched this today. AAFES thought it would be a good flick to show to the troops. They're not always the brightest. Personally I think the movie was entertaining and the story was interesting to me, from a more distant view (seeing the "imperialism" as just human nature, not an allegory for the current situation), although that was kinda hard to do with some of the more blatant anti Iraq statements. Personally though I'd be more threatened by this movie if it hadn't been so heavy handed, subtlety (in my opinion) is way more effective, than smacking people with a hammer that says this is bad.

Whew. Geez, I feel better reading these posts and finding out that I'm not the only one who picked-up on the movie's message. For my part, I think Cameron should, at least, be ashamed of himself...at most, forced to live 30-days in Kabul with the young heroes he took the liberty of portraying as blood-thirsty, indiscriminate killers of peaceful forest people. After two-hours and $20, I asked my 9-year old daughter, \honey, who were the bad guys?\ Her answer: \the soldiers, daddy\. Ugh... I took the time to purge the message she'd just received. I sure hope other parents take the same time.

Clearly, Ole’ James went to VERY great lengths and expense to make certain we all \got\ the message...I certainly did…and I'd slug him if he were here. God help us. In the meantime, let’s make him pay for this travesty. By the way, I want my two-hours back .

Why would you be surprised CJ? The HAF (Hate America First) gang originated in Hollywood. Remember Jane Fonda and hubby Tom Hayden? And for those who called me a Beck propagandists, watch this and weep for your country! It is this cowardice that empowered those who attacked CJ. If you don't get it the first time, watch it until you do. http://www.davidhorowitztv.com/restorationweekend/rw2009/272-opening-breakfast

Beck is a late bloomer since the FACTS have been out there for decades. Loyal Americans just couldn't bring themselves to speak out against it. "Be polite, don't make waves, it's not a real threat, I'm too busy or gosh.. someone might attack me for speaking up!"

"Just make sure you let out a loud “oh, come on!” when the stupidity is just too blatant to ignore." Good luck with that pal. Not the nature of "The Sheeple" in today's world. Besides, some rent-a-cop might just walk up to you and suspend your First Amendment rights. Oh wait... I'm being an alarmist again... that can't happen in America!

I saw this movie, too. WHile the visuals were amazing, the message was sickening. What I was also offended to see/hear, was the voices of known American Indian actors or Black American actors saying the most stupid one-with-Earth comments, how their planet is alive like an organism itself-a New Age AlGore Shirley McClain belief, the apologies for killing wild animals that are trying to kill the human avatar. That same woman who saves the human avatar shows complete connection to the animals and sympathy but tells the human she has no concern for him as a person yet saves him because he had 'heart"...huh? If she loved animals, why didn't she love the alien who she had no reason to fear at that point, especially knowing she was physically superior to him?

And explain to me how such a perfect peaceful race had to have warriors in the first place?? Warriors for who? For what?

One thing that also came out in my mind, is that the movie made white people, capitalists, militarists all evil, but it was a mercenary who became an Avatar-former Marine white guy who saved them.

Oh, and the Marine was a parapeligic so we had to feel sorry extra special for the handicapped. Especially when he overcame his handicap to fight the evil white men. All the while helping the white men knowing they wanted the Na'avi minerals for back home.

Something else that was so phony, anyone who knows anything about mines or drilling for oil knows about making tunnels or drills that can turn corners and right angles, yet the space age white men cant do this?

I agree with everything that has been said so far, but in fact, it is propaganda, just like the divisionism drivel Matthews and Limbaugh are spewing everyday (while enemies are targeting our nation). You can choose to be swayed, and buy in or make your mind up for yourself. I saw the messages presented but in my opinion only someone who has had boots on the ground deserved to have his opinion heard with credibility. Cameron is not a veteran and knows squat about war or the environment. He is an entertainer whom is playing off the current social psyche. At the end of the day it is all about money. He does not have a real history in either the anti-war/military or pro-environmentalist movements but is only making use of controversy. Controversy + films = $$$$. Secondly, people want it bigger and better so what better than to see a real controversial movie that has the best special effects to-date. At the end of the day, I decided to ignore the "symbolism”, enjoy the show, and then not think about it later as I have better things to do such as enjoying dinner with my wife. In addition, who cares about some hippie director; when two aisles of congress and the current admin are bankrupting us?

I was looking forward to seeing Avatar based on the previews in the theatres. After I saw Cameron interviewed on Charlie Rose last week, it destroyed any desire to see the movie for just the reasons you state -- it was all political crap. I figure they make the military the bad guys because they are an easy target and Obama is sacred so the cowboy president is the new/old cliche... and hey! who doesn't want to save the --- whales? dolphins? trees? owls? [fill in the blank]? jeebus, hollyweird... give us a good story and throw in the special effects -- but we'll come for the story and the acting. leave the frickin' politics at the door!
