I agree with what tmunson has posted here. i don't think he is particularly saying if you don't go to war you should not be covered. He is just stating that if you are just broken for reasons unrelated to anything the military did they should not be included in the wounded warrior program. I could not agree with him more. I am currently assigned to a warrior transition battalion. There is over 500 soldiers assigned to this unit and from my observations a great deal of them are abusing the benefits provided by the program. I was air evacuated from Iraq, what happened to me was a direct result of serving in the military. It really ticks me off when i speak to a soldier who has not deployed or is broken because of something stupid they did on there own. they should have a separate program for these types of soldiers. I understand we are all in one military but give me a break, there are soldiers i meet on a daily basis that need the care provided my the wounded warrior program and can not get it because all these soldiers are wasting space. it wouldn't be so bad if these soldiers would get themselves fixed and leave in a timely manner. But this is not happening, i have run across soldiers that have been here up to 4 years, most averaging around 1.5 years sitting around here just getting paid to do nothing. this program needs to be fixed. I know some truly wounded warriors also abuse the system but from what i see on a daily basis the ones abusing it mostly are the shitbags that shouldn't even be here in the first place. they know the can get away with it and they like getting paid to do nothing and be un-deployable so they milk the system! it is rather disgusting.

As an active-duty service member, I'm offended that you think only those who go to war deserve disability. I have not been to war, but this isn't by choice. I'm in the Navy, and while we have many Sailors on the ground, it's much harder for us to get there. I've asked twice, and been denied both times, each justified with a crap answer. What I'm getting at is, even though I haven't been to war, it doesn't mean I wouldn't go. I signed up with the agreement that the military would provide me certain benefits, and in return, I would offer my life if needed. Whether I get the opportunity or not is another matter. It's sad that we have Wounded Warriors who are struggling, but that isn't to say those who get benefits for having served, even those never in a war zone, are any less deserving of the benefits they are entitled.
