It is a paycheck
I would like to think that Americans would sign up to defend our country and serve it out of family tradition, a sense to serve, or plain old patriotism. But sometimes it takes not being able to earn a paycheck in order to do it. I mean you may get shot at, maimed, or killed; but hey at least you can put beans on the table….hopefully. January 20th, 2009 at 2:14 pmI made a huge mistake with my son. When he turned 18 I pushed and pushed for him to go to college. The truth of the matter is, he wasn’t ready. He was not a trouble maker. He wasn’t a bad kid. He was plenty smart enough, but I just couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t do college first and military second.
I really believe that some people do well in college and others do well in with other kinds of training — like military training for example. I know that I have watched a lot of kids struggle in college and do poorly because they hated it. The sad part is we don’t value other types of education and training in our society like we should, and sometimes they are just pushed into college like it or not.
I came to my point in a backdoor way. I guess I just wanted to say that maybe a bad economy and the University debt being what it is now, will make some people evaluate and realize that college is not just a 4-year stay over while your parents get a grip about you being a grown up. The best thing my son did was sign up for the Army. He’s a soldier with no doubt. He’s smart, strong, immediate and fraternal. He could have finished college when he was younger, if he had wanted to. Instead he wanted to serve, and I could not be any more proud of him — seeing him earn his way through the ranks and earn the respect of those around him is a feeling that goes beyond explaining. I just smile and say “yep, that’s my son!” or “I am a soldier’s mom!!”
So, some kids whose parents can’t afford to foot the bill in this bad economy may be doing exactly what they want to do or what they should be doing. Maybe they just needed the right reason/excuse or argument to do it!
