The military routinely rates wounded soldiers’ disabilities significantly lower than the Veterans Affairs Department does, prompting the chairman of a Senate panel to suggest Thursday that ratings should be left to the VA.
The government’s two systems for rating and treating veterans’ disabilities, which determine the amount of benefits they receive, were the subject of an unusual joint hearing of the Senate Armed Services and the Veterans’ Affairs committees Thursday.

WASHINGTON (AP) – ” The remains of 10 U.S. airmen, missing in action since a World War II mission over New Guinea, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial, the Pentagon said Monday.
A B-24 Liberator with the airmen was returning to the aerodrome at Nadzab, New Guinea, after bombing enemy targets near Hollandia on April 16, 1944. The aircraft altered course because of bad weather and was flying to the aerodrome at Saidor when it disappeared, the Defense Department said in a statement.

The top American military spokesman in Baghdad says they have new evidence that proves Iran is helping militants attack their forces. The U.S. military displayed weapons said to be made in Iran, and said Tehran was teaching insurgents how to make roadside bombs.

WASHINGTON – The task of signing up people for military service has become much more difficult since the Iraq war and, as a result, much more expensive.
In fact, in per-enlistee terms, recruiting costs have more than doubled over the past 20 years – from about $7,000 per recruit in 1985 to more than $16,000 per recruit in 2005, according to a report for the Defense Department titled “Recruiting an All-Volunteer Force.”

MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA – Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Friday said he would unveil a housing program for veterans aimed at keeping them off the streets when their service is completed.
The Illinois senator told The Associated Press he would introduce legislation Monday that he calls Homes for Heroes. The plan would establish grant and voucher programs to encourage development of affordable housing targeted for veterans.
